Just finished the remaster of System shock 2 and it was honestly underwhelming af. Iโ€™ve heard for a decade plus that this game is a must play and I just dont see itโ€ฆ I played the orignal System shock years ago and then the remaster when it came out and I have to say 1>>>2 Am I wrong? Why is the sequel so revered when its an inferior version? Even Shodan sucked in 2 compared to the orignal. Can someone enlighten me please as to why 2 so beloved

Im a 1 > 2 fag as well but SS2 is fun because of the RPG elements. It's cool to start specking into level 6 weapons and using the assault rifle to obliterate the many. Also it has a strong horror atmosphere. The recreational deck is a good example.

SS2 came out in 1999 and mechanically almost feels as polished as a contemporary game, to put this in perspective Silent Hill and RE2 came out the same year.

It's beloved for being a generational leap in player input and gamefeel.

Absolutely, the RPG systems are what give SS2 its replay value. Min-maxing your psi powers, hacking every turret in sight, or just going full marine with heavy weapons-there's a lot of build variety. But I get why some people are cold on it nowadays. A lot of the design choices, like the weapon degradation and inventory management, feel more tedious than tense in hindsight. SS1's level design and raw atmosphere are tighter, IMO. Also, SS1 SHODAN was straight-up nightmarish. In SS2 she felt almost... campy? Better voice processing in 1 too.

I haven't played ss1 and only played ss2 a year ago and loved it. It might really be that most people never have played ss1 because it just looks too complicated and dated.
I think that ss2 is really immersive and the horror aspect of it was very well done

because at the time it released there was nothing like it. The story twist was one that Bioshock ripped off later and Bioshock is critically acclaimed for its story.

The atmosphere is amazing and carries the game. Like Thief, it should only be played with good headphones, EAX on and in the dark.

I've tried getting into it a couple times and it just doesn't click. It was the same with 1 until I played the remake. Perhaps the remaster of 2 will be the same.

ss2 is good but the last 1/3 devolves into linear action sections replaying it makes you appreciate it more how it's put together, I do prefer 1 as well however
>Why is the sequel so revered when its an inferior version

ss2 dickriders literally never played the first game

Reminds me of the Turok series.
>2 lauded as the undisputed best
>seemingly small pocket of 1 supporters
>series gets remastered 20 years later
>1 slowly but surely climbs its way above 2
Turns out most people never played 1, just like with System Shock.

I like the more cyberpunk feel of SS1 but I don't begrudge anyone it doesn't click with. They're both great games.

Overall it's very good. It's both similar and different enough to the original that you end up with two great versions of the same game without one invalidating the other.

it's good but different and doesn't make the original obsolete, I have a few minor gripes with the inventory and balance which should have been adjusted rather than carried over
the shootan is actually really good but the enemies can sometimes be awkward and you end up taking turns peaking around corners
also like the original the game doesn't spoonfeed what you need to do and most people don't like that at all

You mean the inventory system and management? If so, it's completely different from the original, incorporating SS2's inventory tetris which SS1 didn't have.

I meant the balance, my gripe with the inventory is that there is not enough space for things even your stash is tiny, it's hard to read especially with the distortion damage effects and the auto-sort re-arranges your hotbar for some reason
