In the closing years of the cold war, a lot of soviet academia moved to the west, but they didn't leave their collectivist ideals behind. It was only compounded by propaganda efforts enacted by the west on its own people throughout the cold war targeted at reducing critical thinking in favour of kneejerk limbic system reactions to oppositional viewpoints. Both these things left millennials as a generation vulnerable to brainwashing into particular ways of thinking, while leaving them no avenue to change their minds since their ideals have been adopted as an extension of Ego, so attacking ideas triggers an emotional response intended to preserve one's own identity.
The only members of the generation that escaped were the socially deficient, as a critical component of perpetuating collectivist ideals is the very fact they must be collectively imposed and reinforced.
