Star Fox Adventures is hated more for what people think it represents rather than what it actually is

The bitter divorce between Nintendo and Rare where the former meddled and forced the other into changing their last project on a Nintendo home console into an unrecognizable mediocre mess that fucked over the Star Fox series.
By all accounts and recent interviews even, the process went smoothly with no tension even with the Microsoft buyout.

No, I hate it because it's an unfinished piece of shit. Their attempts to string together what they had for Dinosaur Planet somehow ended up as a far worse game.

I played it for the first time a few months ago. it's not very good. characters are flat and boring, plot isn't interesting at all, the star fox parts feel incredibly shoehorned in, especially the ending, and despite krystal being the only part of the game anyone remembers, she's not a real character at all and spends the entire game trapped doing nothing. if it had released for the n64 like they planned, it would have been a very impressive title for the system, but getting ported to the gc means it lost that novelty aspect and you're left with a mediocre zelda clone

People thought it was a departure from Starfox. It was and ended up a mediocre entry

Did changing the game's story to a Star Fox game really dramatically fuck up the game? I mean character designs, setting and story aren't necessarily relevant to gameplay.

Well ultimately yes, that's the real reason people still talk about and mourn Dinosaur Planet for what it could have been, they mourn the original narrative that told a much darker and deeper story than SFA, they mourn the original version of Krystal who got to be an actual character and not a plot device/carrot on the stick to entice the player.

Maybe. But I feel like the game would have still been mostly a bunch of mediocre side quests and half-baked Zelda clone

I always assumed that Dinosaur Planet had a bit of a troubled development, hence why they folded so easily when Nintendo told them to turn it into a Starfox game.

Are we still pretending this game is good just because Rare made it?
Because even the diehard rarefags that made Banjo-Kazooie more popular than it deserved to be hated this game.

Mind rewriting your post to not be so vague? Say what you mean, nigga.

For me, SFA was just some weird Zelda clone starring Fox, set in a kinda cool dinosaur planet. The game had style, but everything "Star Fox" about it clashed super hard and that's always going to be my main complaint.
All the SF shit in the game was just stapled onto it just to justify the title of the game, nothing more, and that culminated in the game's ending being an Andross fakeout.

It's not a bad game, I still like it from a "Zelda" perspective, but I obviously am still curious as to what the game would've been like without all the Star Fox stuff stapled on.
Would Rare have had more time to finish up the rest of the game?
Would the General Scales fight have been god-tier, or shit?
Would Krystal still have become a furry wet dream for a lot of people?
Would the game have sold better? Worse?
Those questions still keep me pretty curious, but I know we'll probably never get a real definitive answer to them.
