Whilst the game still is one of the best games in the past few years, when they mentioned that they did blind auditions for the voice actors that's clearly a lie. Getting Ben Starr and Jen English has clearly helped the marketing massively. The rest of the marketing is just because people enjoyed the game.

Why would Tsushima beat TLOU2? The consistency is the highest rated NEW game usually wins. The upset being God of War over RDR2 and maybe one other game. Highest=Wins generally is the obvious answer.
