You're not invulnerable those enemies have bumpers that knock you off. You can also freely jump off the ball at any moment which is why the spikes are there.

It's one of those short levels in Astro Bot that's themed around one of the buttons on the PlayStation controller. If you fly your controller around the major level planets sometimes there are stars that you can crash into and they have these small levels where you can get a bot
