I'm looking for a MMORPG to play.

I want something that is free. I don't mind if you have to grind or some content is locked behind a paywall, but I want most content to be playable for free. I don't mind playing older games.

I tried Guild Wars 2 and I just wasn't feeling it. Any recommendations? Preferably on Steam, but whatever goes.

Literally nothing. WoW Classic still the only MMO worth playing, and that’s sad.

This is the first time asking this. I tried GW2 and didn't really like it. I don't know what else is worth trying. Dungeons & Dragons Online and Neverwinter look neat but I'm assuming they're heavily monetized

If you actually got all F2P Skills to 60, you should have little issue grinding up enough Gold to buy a Bond, which then gives you access to the real game.

Star Wars Galaxies revival has a small but moderately stable player base. I don't think they make you pay anything. Pretty sure it's a bunch of autists who have it set to before the jedi update that fucked with everything. https://swgr.org/home/

honestly, the mmo market is a mess right now.
chinese and korean mmos (actual mmos, not just lobby games posing as mmos) are still swimming in mtx, even if they have big and good ideas.
new western mmos die, get stuck in dev hell, or never release for one reason or another and are usually only ok.
I had a bit of fun on a Ragnarok private server, Alfheim, but the population died a while back.
Horizon XI for FF11 was cool, and the community and devs aren't too bad either. But it is a lot of old heads really stuck in their ways. Plus they're super scared of people botting or account sharing, so you need to be careful of not doing "suspicious" things or you risk eating a ban. didn't happen to me, but I had heard of it happening so.
Otherwise what is there?
OSRS is good fun. WoW is there in both classic and retail. I fell off retail long ago and didn't enjoy it.

You either haven't actually played or have the work ethic of a sweatshop botter, 15 mil for a new or even mid-game f2p account takes way longer than a few days. Even end-game, with all the f2p restrictions, barely makes anything more than mid-game players. Even pking would take forever because you'd be slogging through duels for rune pieces.

Project Epoch, a "Classic+" server, is poised to release in a week or so. That would be the next noteworthy server.

There's nothing to be paranoid about. You use the original game files and executable (well, with two caveats: Epoch, having custom content, does make you download archive files but those are just archive files and "safe", and there's a known remote code execution vulnerability for legacy clients, but there's a patch: https://github.com/stoneharry/RCEPatcher - and you know, the exploit was there in 2005 too if you played on Blizzard's servers, and any other game can have undiscovered such vulnerability also).

If your actually desperate to find something new ill recommend this, skim through the thread because there are multiple options between tlp, live, and emulators.

Its not free to play but ESO is my go to. You can pick up a bundle with most dlcs for under $50 most of the time because its always on sale or base game is like $20 on steam right now

I’m gonna tell you the secret OP: only narrative matters with MMOs.

Maybe you’ll scoff at that notion, but think of it like this: every MMO is going to have you doing dumb grind shit for hours. The only way to get through the terrible dungeons and old content that co-op party members blaze through while dressed as a BDSM mage is if you fall in love with the world and a specific female NPC.

Which mmo to choose? Go on YouTube and look up title screens. The one with the title screen with music that draws you in the most will be the one. This is not a joke post.

It actually kinda feels like an elder scrolls game. The combat is more involved than most MMOs i've played, almost feels like skyrim mixed with diablo the way the class and weapon abilities work.

The exploration is one of the best pqrts though, having most of tamriel to explore is awesome, you can walk from Mainland morrowind to Riften and Windhelm in skyrim. That and roughly half of Oblivion's cyrodil and the imperial city make up the pvp area

Game is likely going to change wildly across the board at that point.
Be that as it may right now would be the best time to try it. Big events, good stuff on horizon, just got a slab of new content, and I like mabi.

Game is held up on old code from 2002 using bubble gum and duck tape. That's why its getting an Unreal Engine update because it desperately need it. There's other glaring issues but you wouldn't understand them unless you've played the game enough for some time. Other than that, the game has too much soul to be held down by modern MMO mechanics and believe me, they've been trying to turn it into another tank, healer, dps, MMO.
