a good dev could make a good game even from a 20 year old engine. it's only a matter of skill.

Only indieslops are using this shit. Youโ€™re not going to see a real game come out godonโ€™t, but you will see plenty of pixelshit platformers about mental health and bad 3d mascot platformers with fake-ps1 graphics.

godot is shit like 99% of free softwares because it's designed by people who want to write softwares but not use them for their intended task, resulting in janky and half baked crap

Even worse, it's compounded by the fact that the people USING godot don't realize that they're technically writing software but don't treat it as such, and therefore end up making buggy unoptimized crap.

I've been meaning to dabble, don't really have any game dev plans. But it would be fun to make something move around a screen.

Are there any better tutorials than "Your first 2D game" on the Godot site? Is that a fine starting place?

Exactly this. Corollary to that: it has never been so easy to make a game, as good as the classics. Assets, engine, programming tutorials, all free. Your only challenge is your capacity to make something fun.

That must be funny if you are unknown, but after any amount of mild "success", getting screencaped like that saying some unhinged shit could definitely kill your game. Those dudes posting their projects fully there are crazy. Take all the help you can get, but never identify yourself.

The difficulty curve ramps up exponentially the more realistic you try to go for because of texture resolution and memory limits. Modern PBR substance painter workflow requires unique textures for every surface and makes it really difficult to do tiling textures like old games. To cover a single small building inside and out you need like 150MB of 2k textures and it will still look blurry.
