This. Compare Croc forums from the past to Banjo forums. Banjo has been more popular for decades. The youtubers didn't make it bigger, the game being bigger made more youtubers talk about it.

A lot of people owned Croc without caring about it much, including me. Games like Frogger: He's Back! sold more than both Banjo and Croc without any lasting cultural influence.

I had both Croc games as a kid. They barely left an impression on me because they were very mediocre, so I'm not nostalgic for them. Ironically I'm more nostalgic for Mario 64 and Banjo that i played at a friend's house, despite never owning the console.

The fact Croc 2's sales collapsed to a ~500k flop and Banjo Tooie managed 1.5m showcases that Croc fell off a cliff and became irrelevant within 2 years of release and Banjo was still fairly popular. Croc couldn't stand the test of time in its own generation, why would people fondly remember it now?

So what? Nobody with any sense is going to wax nostalgic over how good Croc is, because it wasn't.
