it was a dvd player and cd player. Plus you could still pop playstation games in and play them so even if you didn't want to play ps2 games you still had a massive amount of games to choose from.

The PS2 was around 100 million sold when the PS3 was released. It sold the remaining 50-60 million units mostly in South American countries where it hadn’t officially launched. They released it there for a budget price. The slim PS2 also saw a price cut everywhere and was positioned as a cheap casual console alternative to the Wii for games like Guitar Hero and Buzz and Singstar while the Wii was very difficult to obtain. It was the cheapest console around at $100 in the US during this period, played DVDs, and had no competition at its price point since the GameCube and Xbox had been retired in 2005 and 2006. Also aside from the US and Japan, PS2 BC sucked on thr PS3 and was eventually removed.
