Kojima was absolutely right about this. DS2 was way too streamlined for mainstream enjoyment. Game was too easy, all the friction was gone, didn't have to think about void outs or traversal at all. The weird thing is that it's his own studio with very little pressure from anyone else, why did it end up this way?

Kojima showing how extremely out of touch he is? Wow. Who could've seen that coming.
In other news, the sky is blue. More at 11.

I'm not that surprised, honestly. DS1 was clunky as shit so it's not a big leap for the sequel to try to tune all of the problems, but then it turns out all those "problems" were what made the game unique and giving people the ability to ease into this one with few setbacks functionally numbs the entire design point of the games. Kojima probably reacted to player retention not being that good at all and aimed to reach broader, but hit the other side of the extreme where the delivery exploration experience is simply a video game now instead of his "artiste la intention".

Yes but it was without a doubt tedious. Which was sort of the point.

If Kojima is complaining so much about this, then why the fuck did he put in urinalist mode difficulty that lets you skip bosses? That option should not exist in any game.

He probably thinks the game was supposed to be extremely off putting and bizarre from how it's presented with all the wacky shit, like avant garde in a "you just don't get it/this is too advanced for you" kind of way. What he fails to understand is that each generation gets more and more weird and more and more accustomed to weird shit. DS2 is quirky at best and "lol xd random" at worst. There's nothing "shocking" about it, just confusion at its most. No one was going "ZOMG KOJIMA HAS SUCH A WEIRD BRAIN, HOLY HECK!" because this isn't the fucking 2000s anymore. It's 2025. People either just tolerate it or mock it because they're used to his bullshit. In trying to be "unorthodox", he became extremely basic.
TLDR: he's a fraud and a hack who doesn't understand how to make something genuinely unique and earnest.

does this mean DS3 will be even harder? Playing on the brutal difficulty presented a challenge multiple times during the early stages of the game.

to be fair, from the jump it seems like combat was the focus. Your first few missions introduced mules while in DS1, I felt like they weren't introduced until mid game.

Strange. Why did every game before say "A Hideo Kojima game" then?

there probably won't be a DS3, at least not one directed by Kojima. he already has two other projects lined up.

You mean the game where every mission blatantly had "made by Kojima" in its opening credits?

people demolished him for this take but he was absolutely right. DS1 felt mostly cohesive, a lot of goofiness, but an earnest attempt at creating a world with some sense of actual stakes.

DS2 is pure bullshit. It's SO many cameos that feel completely out of place. Many of the missions are like "woah thanks for getting this pizza for me. Ok now here's a gun I have for some reason"
