Man, I miss when cutscenes used to be a reward for overcoming a challenge and beating a portion of the game.

Whether they were state-of-the-art CGI or in-engine, they always had an immense impact on you when you actually deserved them. Even in games with simple or short stories, the cutsenes became iconic as fuck due to this; each and every moment burned into your memory. Now compare this to all the modern slop with HUNDREDS of hours of cutscenes literally nobody remembers. Cutscenes used to be the hardest thing to do in a game, now they're the easiest thing to do in a game, so most games are just cutscenes.

Always was fun to finish the single player mode in fighting games to get all cutscenes for every fighter.

Some were dramatic other funny.

man i'll never forget the prerendered cutscenes in final fantasy 8. they made the setpieces feel completely epic and definitely felt like a reward after a long stretch of often tedious gameplay
the bits in ff7/8 where they use FMV as the background during gameplay sequences, while a fairly simple trick, still feel very cool even today imo

That was the gimmick behind Conker's Bad Fur Day.

Fully-voiced cutscenes were Rare back then and each one was a funny little moment that rewarded you for the bullshit you put up with.

God yeah, that feeling of finally beating a tough boss or clearing a brutal level and getting treated to a cutscene felt like a warm pat on the back. Games used to understand pacing-build tension with gameplay, then reward you with story. Now? It's all ass-backwards. Games front-load exposition and just dump hours of dialogue and fluff at you before you even swing a sword. No stakes, no payoff. Give me that old-school Metal Gear Solid pacing any day-cutscene, gameplay, another cutscene, but all earned and dripping with SOVL.
