Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Just finished this game. Let's talk about it.

It's thoroughly "alright", but it really should have dropped any story relation to SH1.

I like the opening movie song, too bad it takes fucking forever to play and it's never used anywhere else.

It's definitely the best Western SH game because it tried to do something different instead of just ripping off 2
The story was also surprisingly decent and the ending twist was well executed

The lack of combat and easy puzzles still sucked though, it was a step away from being a walking sim

This game got ported everywhere it seems. Obviously I had the Wii original but I knew of the PS2 port (which is super expensive now).

I didn't know it came out on the fucking PSP?

It came out just on these 3 platforms, it never had a PC or HD console port and never got remastered

had some okay ideas but still marred by western SH dev's obsession with SH2. the lack of any danger outside of the nightmare chase sequences also really kills the vibe once you figure it out, nothing scary ever happens outside of the nightmare because everything is just repeated mechanics. ghost Cheryl, the voicemail ghosts, etc. there's nothing totally esoteric and out there like the apartment whisper from SH2 or the bath tub room from SH3 that make you go "what the fuck?"

that era was a weird one of hardware. the PS3 was out but the PS2 still had a really strong install base, and because the Wii had such shit hardware it was pretty common for games to be ported/shared between the platforms. Origins was a PSP game but got a PS2 port for instance.

I've tried playing this 3 times and just don't care enough to wander my way through it

Overrated as fuck. Art design and soundtrack are the only truly exceptional aspects of it, and even then it's hard to appreciate the art design since the game punishes you for looking at stuff. I really wish they stuck with the Cold Hearr concept, seemed way more interesting then tryinh to tie this narrative to SH1. Why call it SH then distance yourself from SH?

I beat it on my PS Vita. I was hesitant at first, but seeing that there's barely any difference outside of graphics, I decided to try it. It plays surprisingly well for being a PSP port.

The plot twist made me shed a tear, even tho I knew it from years ago. The execution was good.

Overrated by who? Most people think it's decent but not nearly as good as first 4 games
> Why call it SH then distance yourself from SH?
Konami wanted money from brand recognition

Overhated because fat baldies got filtered by the kino motion controls from the original Wii version.

Still better than everything that came out after SH4..
The PS2 version sucks since it was clearly made for the Wii controls and it just runs better on Wii overall. It's a great game but the story being a retold version of SH1 hurts the game, should've been its own original story and people would not judge it as harshly.

It was a pretty decent port. The game didn't have much going for it so I didn't expect much comparing it to consoles. It was surprisingly pretty comfy playing on handheld too.

The promise was really dumb, I can at least admit that but for some reason I gave it a 2nd chance/playthrough and the game became less shit the more I replayed it. There was some neat ideas and I still don't blame anyone for calling this game shit. Anyone would be(should be) pissed to find their favorite horror game changed to where all you do is run from enemies. Hell I'm surprised they didn't get death threats over SM.

I think it was the little details that eventually got me hooked and you can't see those details unless you replayed the game multiple times. It might have also helped that I played the PSP port so it was easy to get comfy playing the game.

How come games from that generation did such a great job of capturing a gritty, urban ambiance despite the limited hardware?

Shattered Memories is probably the least scary of the whole series, but honestly I really love it as a psychological thriller. The therapy bits are a fun gimmick and I like how all of the characters you meet act relatively normal, but it's the way in which you meet them that makes things seem increasingly off.

It's a fun direction for a Silent Hill game, embracing the paranoia of thinking that people are all lying to you in some way at first, before diving deeper and deeper into things that just make it seem like you've been going mad from the start.

I only played the PS2 port. It worked fine, but it was funny how certain puzzles clearly just existed so you could lift something up with the wiimote and give it a shake or something.

Playing this game with a friend might be the most awkward gaming session I ever had, because we played it with his divorced mom in the room, and he notably kept picking the options during the therapy sessions saying that parents should stay together for the sake of their kids.

The game is completely designed around wagglan, from the way the camera works to the puzzles to the main method of defense from the monsters. The ports kind of ruin it all. You're supposed to physically shake the buggers off, not just press a button.

Still makes me seethe, there are not enough horror games on the Switch.
