And it’s not that big of an ask to make it where publishers can’t arbitrarily bar access to a game. The only reason to shut one down completely is so they can keep full control over the product and potentially release a new version later that you’re forced to pay for. It’s to prevent an abandoned game from getting a second life with fan servers. They’d lose money on that potential sequel or rerelease.

Yeah, it sure is a good thing that's a standard in all PC games, and the industry hasn't moved to some locked down standard like mandatory automatic matchmaking on proprietary company servers, or god forbid, made singleplayer games require similar online components that break a game you play by yourself when the company decides to stop supporting it, even on PC.
Why, I imagine if things migrated to that, you'd have a lot of people who would very much want that standard back, and might even go so far as to petition a governing authority to force it back to that standard

Yes, but that's only half of the problem.
The other half is the absolute refusal to allow others to operate their own servers at their own expense.
I get it, it's their game, they can do what they want with it, but as someone that greatly appreciates art of all kinds, not allowing anybody to experience art for the sole purpose of "It's mine", is anti-art and anti-artist, and I have a deep problem with that.
The worst part is that there's success stories with people bringing back dead games, some with the developers and publishers blessing.
There's no reason to not allow third party servers, other than unadulterated greed and hatred of art. It's sad, and it needs to be stopped.
