I'm probably one of the few people who actually likes Cernd. Shifter is a great class for SoA with its mega AC and pretty good damage without gear. At absolute endgame when everyone's using god-items assembled from boss drops he's not quite as good, but that doesn't matter when he still kicks ass for 15 hours. He only really starts to suck in ToB where enemies get infinite THAC0.

I'm not sure if Skull Trap was bugged in BG2 or not. It's the only spell like it to bypass Magic Resistance.
In BG1, there was bug? where Flame Arrow was the only offensive magic to bypass MR. Flame Arrow is otherwise worse than basically every other Level 3 spell, but it's the only way Wizards could harm Sarevok, who had like 95% MR. Yet Melf's Acid Arrow couldn't do the same.
You would think that vi the definition of Conjuration, all arrow spells should hurt Sarevok since your Monster Summoning spells bring in creatures with weapons and those work.

The spell does raw magic damage, not physical (as an exploding skull would suggest), fire or lightning, so it bypasses every defense bar magic resistance and saving throws. It gets so ridiculously powerful there's basically no reason not to take it. Skeleton Warriors and Bone Golems are immune as I recall, and Drow will stand up to it pretty well, but it will just delete everything else.

Skull Trap just does magic damage, like Magic Missile and Horrid Wilting, wheres spells like Lightning Bolt and Fireball also check for Lightning/Fire resistance. The only way to survive Skull Trap is to either negate it with Magic Resistance or make a high enough saving throw.
If you put 3 Skull Trap into a Sequencer or 3 Horrid Wilting into a Trigger you neutralize the saving throw, since both only save for half damage.

Necromancer is the best DPS kit, along with Invoker. Enemies get a -2 to their saves when you cast a Necromancy spell and both Skull Trap and Horrid Wilting are the best damage spells in the game. There is no competition for these spells in the Level 3 or Level 8 pools. You bypass the loss of invisibility via potions and the Staff of the Magi. The one true loss is endgame Simulacrum.
Conjurers basically don't get the saving throw bonus outside of weak spells like arrows. Divination is hardly a weakness because all Priests get access to them and you get True Seeing via the Tome of Infinite Spells, which since it's a the Divine version of True Sight bypasses your restriction.
All in all Conjurer is kind of a shit class and perception of how good it is is skewed by Edwin. Invoker is way better but falls behind Necromancer for DPS due to its best spells running into too many resistances late game.

I'll be honest, I really liked her romance route in part because of how relatively slow she goes (obviously it SEEMS fast if you're beelining for it, but if you do it over the course of regular gameplay it takes forever). Going into BG1/BG2 in preparation for BG3 and learning about THAC0 was honestly so confusing. A lower number being better is such a strange concept in an RPG but I got used to it pretty quickly.

The real challenge was then figuring out if THAC0 existed in BG3 when I began playing that and had to decide which is better between the 9 or 10 armours in the first few hours.

You'd have no divine casters for all of BG1 in either case. It sounds like absolute hell.

Does magic resistance in actual D&D work like in BG

The resistances to all other attributes don't work like this. They lower the damage you receive until you are at 100% resistance, which is 100% chance to do 0 damage.

less important imo i've done no clerics several times for bg1. but i tend to favour bg2 power at the expense of bg1 power in general. you could go fighter/cleric multi but xp is getting stretched a bit thin with more than 1 multiclass

It does work like that in actual P&P. In later editions it's a level-based check rather than a flat % to fail, but it's still total negation.
