so is DK Bananza THAT good or will there be "it's no masterpiece" videos coming out in a few months.
Is it a serious GOTY contender next to games like DS2, E33 and Split Fiction?

It's mediocre. Ok at best. It's just another instance of a Nintendo product that would just be bypassed if it was made by literally anyone else. I've stopped taking anything said about a Nintendo game seriously after Tears of The Kingdom got so many 10/10s when it's not even close to that kind of quality. Like a 7 tops.

It's like a 8.3 7.8 game if you've been playing DK since the SNES days. You need to take into consideration the absolute dogshit state of the current day industry, game has perfect controls, good design and it's not made on unreal engine so it's probably a 10/10 in 2025.

Way better than Astrobot and has actual difficulty for what it's worth.

The very beginning is kind of slow as it sets up the story, but after you make it to the open area (B100F) it becomes VERY fun as you are turned loose to play. My personal advice is just go through the story stuff and don't waste time looking around at the beginning, but after you drop down to B100F let loose and start looking for bananas and fossils because it's great.

By the time you return Pauline to her actual form you will be having a blast.

>Is it a serious GOTY contender
In the sense of the award show, probably not because I doubt Nintendo is going to pay for a bullshit trophy. But in terms of games I have played so far this year, yes it's a lot of fun and if the rest of the game is as fun as the beginning (I just beat the first boss), than it will definitely have a shot at being one of the top games this year. But it's hard to say because there's big contenders coming later this year like Metroid.

Compared to everything coming out today for PCs and cuckstation? It's godlike. It has great controls, it has level design instead of yellow paint, and so on. But compared to Nintendos catalogue? Its decent but not their best work. A fun game and well worth the time/money in any case though.

I’m liking it more than Astro Bot right now. It has cool physics and levels but with actual platforming mechanics and depth. You unlock a double jump when holding chunks and you’ll eventually pick up that you can combine it with the surf jump to make a triple jump, then extend your horizontal momentum with a slap, roll, or both. Astro Bot had better bosses though, can’t argue against that.

Got past the first 3 worlds (tutorial included)
So far I'd say it's 1 rung below odyssey, it's more sandboxy which is nice, but the compromises that have to be made to level design aren't enough to make up for it. Having worlds within worlds is cool too like you don't know whether they really just make a world that's a flat plain you spend 30 minutes in until right before you reach the end of it
Also you can just infinitely use the first transformation you get and get every fossil map for an area in like 2 minutes which seems dumb

I really loved it and thought the combat was insanely fun on Expert. The Story really caught me off-guard too it's really good. I do think you should focus on the main quest and maybe do some but not all side-content because a lot of it feels like lazy padding and you'll end up becoming too powerful for the main quest.
it's not a crazy long game so i think you should keep playing

I love the subareas and challenge rooms in Odyssey, the way they focus more on linear platforming is a good contrast to the kingdom overworlds being more open. The postgame rooms like the ones where you're climbing some structure avoiding Bullet Bills or whatever are challenging too, so I enjoy those. Does Bananza have stuff like that? I ask because you say there are challenge rooms but then say you wished there was more platforming.

It's a fine enough game. Basically, if you liked Super Mario Odyssey, or, like, most of Nintendo's output during the Switch, then you'll like Bananza. Is it a masterpiece? Nah. I don't think it's really trying to be though. People are trying to treat it like a Breath of the Wild, like it's supposed to be this "next big thing" for DK, when it's just a fun DK game that lets you go fucking bonkers through almost entirely destructible maps. Is it $70 fun? That's up to you.

I feel the public and Geoff have had enough time to acknowledge the fact that it's basically a JRPG, despite being made by France. Being a JRPG alone disqualifies it from being a GOTY contender at the Geoff awards, at least. I'm not saying this because I dislike the game or JRPGs but just because that's the honest truth of the matter historically speaking.

This is a joke, right? I haven't played Astrobot, but I've seen a webm of some challenge level that looked like it might've been slightly hard.

Nothing in Bonanza is hard. It's comically easy, from start to finish. The closest the game gets to difficulty is MAYBE the final K Rool fight if you have 3 hearts, but even then I think you can tank a hit, so it's trivial baby garbage. If you die in 1 hit, maybe it's a fun 30 minutes.

TotK was also awful baby shit, but I had fun with Ganon on a 3 heart run. K Rool is so slow and easy that he's barely a challenge.

I forgot to mention that Ganon 3 heart is also master sword only, if you use any item combos it becomes trivial slop because you kill him in 3 hits.

As a direct point of comparison, Donkey Kong has challenge levels involving turf surfing over spiked race courses with obstacles. But the difference is that instead of a special gimmick mode that you're locked into, it's all part of DK's regular moveset. The Astrobot thing is weird because the spikes are glorified set dressing, they can't actually hurt you if you can't not be on the ball. Whereas in DK you're free to flub the controls and accidentally leave turf surf and die to the thorns.

More importantly, there's a key difference in how they handle, because DK's surf is actually properly physical and you carry momentum through slopes and turns. So it's more challenging because you can't just stop on a dime or generate a lot of horizontal distance in a jump without building speed up first.

What, you can't jump off the ball? I don't really see how that changes the stage, I guess it's slightly dishonest.

Surf is probably more technically challenging, but the challenge stages in DKB are so comically easy that there's no point in the increased skill ceiling of controlling the surf. Which is why, again, I'll say that Astrobot looked more fun, there were obstacles I might've been tripped up by. DK gives you so many options that it's boring.

>>715775517
The game is easy even without them, but it's annoying that you're forced to take them at points. Even without them, the game has a checkpoint every 5 meters so dying is meaningless.

Probably? So you haven't used the mechanic you HAVE to use to complete the game. The game you totally beat without leveling health even once (meaning you get one-shot by most late-game enemies) and never dying? But you know that there is no penalty to dying despite never dying? And you think that there are multiple items that revive you if you lose all your health despite there only being one?

I mean probably in the sense that "if levels were designed in a way that surf had to be used to perform complex movement techniques, it would PROBABLY be technically challenging". Obviously, in the actual game, surf is a comically retarded movement technique that adds nothing to the experience aside from being required 99% of the time so you aren't moving at the speed of slow.

>The game you totally beat without leveling health even once
I leveled health once, I thought that was obvious given I said K Rool MIGHT be fun if you had 3 hearts because I didn't remember how much damage he did on hit, just that he didn't kill me in 1 hit.

>But you know that there is no penalty to dying despite never dying?
Obviously I died. A game can be pathetically easy but you can still die, you know? You can fall off ledges and shit.

>And you think that there are multiple items that revive you if you lose all your health despite there only being one?
I never really noticed that balloons were used on fall deaths and the other thing was used on HP deaths. In my mind falling in a pit is a HP death to begin with, I never made the connection, they're both insta-revive items.

You really think that if you die in a game, that means it was hard? Any death has to be weighed against the actual inconvenience it causes. Let's say I die in Sonic 1. Well, now I have to re-do the whole stage, so that's up to a minute's worth of time loss. But if I die 3 times, I have to start the whole game over. Sonic 1 is not a very hard game, but it offers some minor challenge.

In DKB, dying removes a bit of your money, and sets you back maybe 10 seconds. Money that is completely worthless. There's no challenge, because there's no punishment for dying.

It's not about the game being hard, it's about the game feeling like it at least challenges you to some extent.
Astro bot has a legitimate problem where the entire game feels as easy as the first half of Mario 3D Land / World, and the "super ultra challenging" optional levels feel like standard mid / semi late game 3D Mario main levels, where they're only mildly challenging or only challenging for newcomers to the genre.

Nintendo appeals to kids because their games have bright colourful graphics and inoffensive content.

Nintendo also appeals to adults because adults just want to play fun and engaging unpretentious games and Nintendo generally make the best video games in the world - with a level of design and craft which can only be appreciated by an educated adult mind.

The grey area is the teens and young men, who struggle with identity and maturity. They shun anything which may appear "child-like" because of their own insecurities, while holding on to a bafflingly hilarious belief that video games are a medium capable of delivering deep, insightful musings on the human condition, naunced storytelling and non-cringeworthy voice acting. They will quickly latch onto the most infantile manifestations of "mature" content to validate their own sense of adulthood.

>Oooh it has boobies and violence and swearing.
>Ooooh its dark and gritty... like my soul.
>I am a mature gamer playing mature games.

It doesn't matter to them that these games play like shit or have terrible basic game design.

A quick look at any Best Games Ever list and - without fail - the Top 20 will always be completely saturated with Nintendo titles.

If it was $60, then an 85 or so would be fair. But $70 easily drags it down 10ish points IMO, especially since it doesn't obviously look like an upgrade over Nintendo's Switch 1 fare, nor even run like it either. This game's biggest accomplishment in the Nintendo ecosystem is bringing K. Rool and the Kremling Krew back into the fold.

Not wowed with the Switch 2's first-party exclusives honestly. Especially not enthused that almost everything is a goddamn spinoff so far, and this is the one non-spinoff we do currently know of. Spinoffs are nice to have... But alongside a decent library of new mainline games, not instead of. If we don't get a good juicy general Direct in September or earlier, I'm absolutely jumping ship.

I just looked this slant eyed bug up and no, he's not a streamer that "specializes in Nintendo content", he's a Mario Maker 2 challenge level streamer. The most streamed hours he has for a 3D platformer of any kind is Mario Odyssey with a grand total of 80 hours streamed since its release. Mario Maker 1 and 2 are the only two Nintendo games that crack his top 10 moat streamed list

It looks pretty fun man, in terms of difficulty it's like an average late-game level in any DKC
I'll get Bananza once I have a Switch 2, but man I miss DK being the hard as balls, super precise 2D platformer
With Retro seemingly not going back to DKC3, I feel like DK will have the same fate as Zelda: fun and creative games but completely detached from their roots.

Since they were talking about it above, I’ll go ahead and say the main reason Astro Bot’s challenge levels aren’t actually THAT hard is because of the format of them, and this applies to this game as well. You do stuff in bursts, so you do a segment, then get a little breather area, and then you do another segment. Because of the way these levels are structured as 3D platformers, you can take a few seconds to analyze what the next segment wants you to do and its never really that complex. In Astro Bot, the solution is usually quite simple and you just gotta execute it with moderate timing skills while watching out for enemies that spit stuff at you. In DK, I actually “fucked up” for a bonus banana where I had to blow up the ceiling and I didn’t, but the difference there is that I got the banana anyway because of movement tech and there’s a few other ways to get there as well.

So you didn't fuck up.

This is the fundamental issue with nu-Nintendo design. You CAN'T fuck up. The game gives you the option to nuke the whole stage, but below every required platform is a metal frame you can't destroy. The game is designed for toddlers, there is no concept of risk vs reward.

It wasn’t even that. I just had to get the banana in a way where if I messed up the execution, I actually would’ve died while the other way would’ve just been risk free. But yes you are right about this and a lot of modern games that don’t do it like this just do it in short bursts instead of full-fledged levels unless it’s the secret stage or something.

I'm not really seeing any actual negative points to the games detriment itt. Just asshurt moping.

It's honestly a brilliant game. Sure it's Odyssey-like, but hoe is that a bad thing? Beyond the super polished controls, beautiful art direction, arguably fun designs and writing and QT3.14 Paulina, the LEVEL DESIGN and PLAYER DIRECTION is pure master class.

The game never feels like it's forcing you down one specific path for even many of the mandatory missions. All optional collectibles are accessible from many different direction, subtle hints guide your way too and from every hidden item.

There is just zero friction in finding your own path. Many times I see one fossil or banana I wanna get and suddenly I burst through a wall into a nee cave. Satisfyingly beat the shit out of some enemies and - oh! There's more secrets. Repeat that a few times and like magic you completely naturally seem to always find your way back to the area you started from, zero confusion on where you are and where to go next.

I don't remember the last game that guided a player this instinctively without hindering intuitive traversal of the world, through destructible terrain no less.

Take from that what you will.

Again, you could still get the banana. In games built by people for people, instead of children's toys built for retards, the game would've locked you out of the banana, because you were stupid. You would've sat at the bottom looking up, and gone "well, that was dumb of me".

Sure, you might've had a bit of fun with the more complex execution required to get up there now, but that's the "this game is so boring/this game is so fun" BotW webm in a nutshell.

It would have been cool if they had more levels themed after DKC environments I'm mostly kidding, I'm only up to the Forest Layer right now and did some snooping ahead, but so far the levels have been pretty great. I would have liked more outdoor-looking levels, as abstract as that would be. Some of the areas feel a little monotone

Mostly because bosses are never really talking points in platformers and are usually the weakest parts. Besides that, In Bananza you’ll beat 99% of bosses in about 30 seconds or so. You know the age-old “hit the boss three times” formula Nintendo has practically been synonymous with? Yeah, you now two-cycle bosses. Every fight I’ve fought so far with the exception of a minecart one was a two cycle where you punish one or two lame moves. Astro Bot’s bosses have more going on and actually last a moderate amount of time.

Watched a bit of it. The camera is a disaster when you are tunneling through the ground, strange since that’s usually a Nintendo strong point.

Levels all look the same as odyssey food kingdom. No background graphics or sky box. It’s just platforms suspended over a hazy gradient of muted colors. Blatantly unfinished, again. What is going on over there? It’s half their games are unfinished these days.

i played it this year for the first time and it's simply not a good game in any facet. it has not aged well because so many games have copied it and do the open world with stealth elements better. so it has an unfinished story and the gameplay is nothing to write home about. it's not worth playing and i'm saying that as someone who marathoned mgs1-5+pw. ground zeroes is legitimately better than tpp.

Its very similar to mario odyssey. So its essentially sandbox collectathon.
The terrain being destructible is mostly a novelty you don’t actually need to smash anything more than dirt for any banandium or fossil, at least SO far, I’ve only done the lagoon and pretty much every fossil and banandium was behind a dirt wall.
I MAY have needed to break rock for the whale fossil I guess Idr but I don’t think the devs would softlock your save by forcing you to upgrade your punch to break higher tiers of rock, unless you can just use kong bananza for that since that bananza can break concrete walls
