Weird to make an American Squid game because America already did their own death game series before with The Hunger games. We always seem to go through a decade where death game movie or tv series defines that era. Battle Royale seemed to define the formula even though there have been several but far between movies about death games before it. You don't think about them but once they are mention you would say "yeah, those are death games".

Going by the movie here (didn't read the book) there was no "game" part to the Renewal, it was basically glorified mass suicide.
