DES is good up to the dumbass item limit. I've never had much trouble with this part. I actually got lost in the lava dungeon and latria. Rooms were too samey. But it's good to remember that I played “blind” but I already knew DS1, 2 and 3, so I guided myself through the callbacks that these games made to DES.

DES biggest problem is the lack of checkpoints. But the last stages are quite short and in my opinion less painful than DS1 levels. No one has ever played unpatched DS1 where you have fewer bonfires to warp to. It's just painful

Yeah exactly, Tower Knight runback is annoying in a "how long do I have to jog past these spear-chucking losers again" kind of way, but it’s not peak bullshit. The real test of patience is Flamelurker if you’re low on grass or keep dying and have to sprint that lava maze just for another shot. I would love if they built another game like this with themed levels you could jump in and out of and made it one giant dungeon crawl to go through them. underground passage is dark with a bunch of enemies (including fast dogs, hidden enemies, and arrow spam) the fastest way is down main street with the dragon. If you just wait out his breath attack its an easy run, you just have 3 sections you have to do that in the level.
Alternately, the dragon is easy to kill with bow cheese from the first tower, you just only hit him once or twice per his attack (that you are above and immune). Buy lots of arrows and hunker down but it goes an item worth a good chunk of souls and it gone forever.
