The word on the grapevine circa 2018 is that K. Rool's hiatus was the result of "internal apathy and factional disagreements" on NCL's part and apparently him doing so well on the Smash ballot is what ultimately convinced them to change their mind on the character going forward. One thing that kinda sorta backs that up is this interview with Tanabe circa 2010 in regards to DKC Returns, where he seems to heavily imply that he and Miyamoto came to the mutal agreement that K. Dude has a lot of contact with Retro Studios staff so I could see it, so perhaps the Kremling thing in Returns was really just more of a mutual agreement on Tanabe/Miyamoto and Retro's part.

I liked the concept of Snowmads and were Tikis were just kinda ok but honestly, the best non-Kremling villian ideas for DK are just simply antagonistic Kongs like Jungle Beat or Bananza.

In retrospect, it was extremely fucking retarded that Nintendo needed to have an online popularity poll to figure out that the main antagonist of one of their most popular franchises was someone people loved and wanted to see again. According to someone who worked on the Minecraft Universal Studios map and thus was able to talk to folk from Universal Creative, the latter actually wanted to incorporate K. Rool (they even tried to use Smash Ultimate to back up his popularity) and celebrate more of DK's history but were ultimately mandated by Nintendo to just stick to Tikis and Returns imagery in general. One thing that backs this up is the old leaked DKC land model concept that was leaked many years ago that was largely 1:1 with the land we got with one notable exception: Ellie the Elephant being plopped in there. He also mentions there were similar constraints with the Mario Land being primarily limited to 3D Land and World, though it was apparently slightly easier to use other stuff (i.e Yoshi's Island).

Now we know Bananza and thus K. Rool's return were planned shortly after Odyssey's release so in the case of this as well as Mario Strikers, there probably wasn't intended malice on Nintendo's part as they likely just figured it'd be better to reintroduce the Kremlings on their own terms in their core games as opposed to ancillary material, but yes.

The main thing is that a lot of the mandate shit or whatever are schizo theories are useless when shit happenong is very inconsistent. As a whole, the Mario universe was very separated with shit from DK rarely crossing over, Yoshi also having few connections and Wario never. Mario Party had a few entries where it relegated DK to an NPC (still when it was Hudson Soft), and that was also around the time when Diddy was added to Mario Kart and both he and Funky were added on Mario Kart Wii. Nintendo released a few DK games like King of Swing which featured K. Rool, and the Kremlins appeared in Smash 4, and Strikers. Not to mention the version of Super Sluggers on Wii which featured K. Rool. In reality, it is most likely a combination of factors, the main one I think is that Nintendo usually has some studios in charge of characters and for a long time DK was jumping around studios which means less games. Plus, given the use of the Tikis at the park, it could have been the case that the park ideas were floating around for a while and for whatever reason they thought were a good fit for it.

It's a real oddity that it took this long to return the Kremlins to a mainline DK game.
Rare gave DK his proper main villains at the time when the franchise needed to stop being about a giant monkey climbing a giant NY building.
Mario doesn't always fight Boswer, and Link doesn't always have to fight Ganon. But not giving DK his crocodile enemies since DK64 should be seen as business malpractice.

I hope we get to see/read some reactions from the old Rare guard who worked on DKC/64 and what they thought of how Nintendo brought back K. Rool in this. This was a great revival, but now we see how Nintendo actually handles them and does them justice.

Both things are probably true. I get the feeling that Miyamoto is viewed in the same way by current game devs that Stan Lee was viewed in the 70s/80s. Good example being Iron Man's nose, for about a year and a half Iron Man had a nose, because Stan looked at something an artist was drawing and said "Where's Iron Man's nose?" (referring to Tony Stark and not the actual suit) and the artist, instead of questioning him, had an OH SHIT moment and completely redesigned the Iron Man mask to have a nose, and they even justified it in story. Then a year and a half later, Stan finally looked at an Iron Man comic, saw the suit had a nose and threw a fit, so they removed it.

So what I think probably happened was

Maybe it's just me. But I've been practicing topology pretty hard. And the lines of his scales look like the same topology you would make for the mesh. Perhaps un-subdivided once. You can clearly see the 3 poles and 5 poles.
They didn't even try to make the scale look like they overlap each other. They're perfectly separated tiles.

But look at the kremlings in the OP. Their scales are smaller and more random. So the squares must be a deliberate design choice. But then again, maybe not. They allowed DK's head tuft to go unwaxed in the final game. That's a clear mistake. I dunno.

I don't know anything about textiles. But I'm checking around, and it seems like crocodile pattern is a kind of embossed print. Meaning, they grab other leathers like lambskin, and process them to appear like crocodile. Except that the embossed patterns aren't looking as realistic as the real crocodile skin.
I do see some squarish patterns in the real skin. Though, they're typically raised with ridges, and the squares merge into more random scale noise. So you don't get a full body square pattern. Just patches of squares with ridges here and there.
