Yeah, crazy how going to college you not only develop a long term career, but end up having tons of sex and partying. You not only get a stable future, but also get to enjoy being young and doing crazy shit.

yeah,
1. you're competing against millions
2. you need top tier equipment
3. you're fucked if you get canceled
4. you're in a toxic environment
5. your skills could be neutered by patches
6. it doesn't give a useful skillset
7. you will suck and it will be tough to learn past a certain age

for that effort you can do an actual sport

I personally think Twitch became the way it is now due to the fact many "normal" gamers have utterly turned on esports and streamers. Twitch is a political/irl streaming hell hole now becasue of it. Everyone hates big streamers for ruining games and a lot of people are starting to hate esports too

You misunerstand the situation.
In the current job market, EVERYONE is screwed.
Once, having a degree was a guarantee that you would get a well paying job.
Now it's not true anymore, but it doesn't mean that those who don't have a degree have it much better, in fact they have it even worse, but it's less surprising in their cases.

I didn't go to parties in college, for some reason that made me label myself as a loser for so long. But I had a super cute virgin gf that I fucked for years during college, and now I make a ridiculous amount of money working from home, dating another cute girl 10 years younger than me. But the loser mentality doesn't go away, and I'm sure it has something to do with spending the last 14 years of my life browsing this site.

It was for me when I was young, tho it's a lot easier now to make a living off video games. It basically boils down to; how attractive are you? How charismatic are you? Being a pro gets attention, but keeping attention is what you're after because once the game you're a "Pro" at loses popularity or you get too old to be a "Pro", you'll need a large base of supporters.

With coming Ai competing for attention, your best bet is to train to be an Electrician on the side.

a few years back, I had a pro Halo 3 gamer try to convince me to become a pro Splatoon 2 gamer. i didnt go for it, and now have a well-paying career that i actually like. he, meanwhile, has seemingly vanished. no idea what happened and i'm a little scared to ask.

point being, yes, pro gaming is - from my experience - not a career worth working.

When choosing a career, you should generally ask yourself: "How will this help me if society collapses?".
The construction worker can still apply his skill to build things, the professional cook can attempt to make squirrel stew a bearable experience, even a musician can do menial tasks and enrich the lives of his community with mild entertainment.
What does a professional gamer or youtuber do for the community? You could argue that they provide entertainment now, but it's not the kind of entertainment that can persist if the world goes to shit for a while.

I wonder. I was one of the highest ranked League of Legends players in pre-season 1 and in season 1, always played with all the people that would eventually become pros and I'm certain I could've become one of them, but I just continued my studies instead and played as a hobby.
On one hand because I continued my studies I landed a good fully remote software dev job, and I was able to drop League when it became boring to me, not needing to marry the game like some pros do, big salaries weren't a thing in the west back then so I guess that helped. But on the other hand I kinda regret not giving it a go, seeing how far I would've been able to go, some of the old dudes from s1 ended up going back to their studies and are now employed in regular jobs so going pro for a few years wasn't a harmful pursuit after all.
I don't know, I think you just gotta know when to call it quits, give it a go if you'd like to and when you're too washed just pursue the next thing that makes you happy.
