I think it was because pokemon games are made concurrently. By the time the newest game hits and people love it, the next one is halfway done. There's no time to tear down the foundations and start over.

You know what pisses me off? I really liked how in PLA everyone is paranoid of most Pokemon, while also worshipping some them. These are monsters who can breath fire, control your mind, and in some cases can change the fucking weather. A wild predator would have no compunctions about flying to kill you at supersonic speed to get it's next meal. the scarlet and violet dev cycle was pretty long. they were already almost done by then.

PLA wasn't very good either and only got as much praise that it did because it succeeded Sword/Shield and BriliantDiamond/ShiningPearl which are two of the most embarrassing video game products ever released by Game Freak and PLA being mediocre was good by comparison. ZA looks like shit, and while I don't want to praise a 5/10 story LA does approach some incredibly novel concepts(FOR POKEMON). Shit like being exiled, double crossed, villains turned friends in conjunction with friends turned enemy is really refreshing(FOR POKEMON) prioritizing catching lots of Pokémon for better and worse emphasizing becoming a full pokemon master and somewhat proving yourself to the Pokegods, its all very neat and provides a holistic system for the world you exist in. PLA was a breath of fresh air because of the time period and setting where Pokemon were actually treated as mystical creatures that weren't fully integrated into human society. There's mountains, canyons, rivers, and clear divides requiring you to get Herba Mysticas for your 'don to explore them, but like 90% of that mess can be avoided just with Pokeball battle teleports so the level design is pretty iffy overall. SV is more like if you took all of PLA's biomes and stitched them together so you could traverse between them all but made them look worse graphically.

If you have to get him a Switch game then you pretty much have three easy choices.
>LGPE if you want him to have gen 1 but even easier with Go capture mechanics and good graphics.

BDSP is constantly on sale as well, it's super easy to find $30 copies all the time.

PLA isn't a good choice because of the format change, I don't think that's good for a first game.
