I hate the MegaMan formula. Playing through long stages on your first go only to find out you picked the wrong one and being forced to restart the game to go try a different one and hope the boss is weak to the first weapon is dumb. I hate it actually. There's no pattern to finding out who is the best order. It's all pure luck based on your first go around.

I wish it weren't because the games are only fun and enjoyable when you pull up a guide to see what level order you're supposed to do

I never even use the weaknesses. These games are easy as fuck. The enemy patterns are usually pretty simple till you get to the big baddy stages after defeating the 8 robots.

The implicit rule in Megaman is that you either pick:

1- The top-left stage or
2- The "lame/funny-looking" boss (especially if they have Cutman-like eyes).

That works for 80% of the time, worst-case scenario you get game over in 5 minutes and find an easier stage in the second try.

Mega Man X for the iPhone

I didn't get that feeling, OP. I felt that finding out which miniboss was vulnerable to which weapon was part of the game, it was a fun kind of experiment or puzzle that you had to solve. There is a freedom in the sense that you get to decide which level to play through first, and technically speaking you CAN defeat the bosses in any order, it just makes it a lot harder. So it's a great way to challenge yourself, to play only with the default gun and try to beat the whole game in that way.
So I saw it as integral to the formula and part of what made the Megaman games so good. If they had just went and put all the levels in a pre-configured order, then I wouldn't have liked Megaman anywhere near as much, that's for sure.
Lastly, if you read the manual (you read the manual before playing games right, Anon?) then you will see that in there they go and tell you which level to play first, if you want to be efficient.

Megaman is not a jrpg. You don't start playing it, retry stages until you beat them, defeat the last boss and put it down forever.
The megaman formula is replaying the game once or twice a day or so, quitting when you get a game over or beat it. You won't beat it on your first sitting, but you will get better and better until you're able to breeze through the game. Or you get bored.
This is especially evident in the perfected megaman formula aka the megaman zero games, with the rank mechanic. You go through the games using crutches like weaknesses and cyber elves/power ups, having a crappy rank, until you're able to do it without using those at all while getting a good rank. You are meant to replay them many many times to get the full experience.

The weakness weapons totally shut down the bosses in most cases, there's no point in giving them mechanics at all if they're just weapon checks. The general idea has you go through the game with whatever weapons you have at hand, then test weaknesses in the boss rush, then replay the game with your new knowledge, which is what a blind playthrough will usually produce. Ironically having more but incomplete knowledge of the game will lead to you playing like a retard ala OP.

I beat like half the bosses without dashing, including the boss of the fucking stage they're in so I basically had no hope of finding them without the internet. In MHX it was moved to Flame Mammoth's stage where the x buster upgrade used to be. It's fairly missable for someone new, and prior knowledge works against people because you'd just assume you need to come back with the helmet upgrade like the original anyway.

It's such a weird change because the original knew well enough to place it right in your path so you'd have to stumble upon it eventually by just trying every stage.

Its common for people to only use buster in stages and only use the special weapons for bosses. Theres also the attitude of wanting to save your weapon energy for the boss whose weakness you dont know yet so some players are inclined to not use special weapons when they can make do with the buster. The fun of Mega Man is tackling the stages however you want and slowly improving as well as eventually gaining more powers to help you conquer the rest more easily, and using knowledge on weaknesses etc. to make later playthroughs more smooth and satisfying. Thinking you NEED the 'ideal path' from the very beginning is very, very pussy loser behavior and just looking it up ruins half the fun of the series.

Besides, in most of the megaman games your default weapon works well, or well enough, on multiple bosses, ESPECIALLY the like, 90% of the series where you have the charge shot that works equally well on all bosses, and various boss weapons work at least fairly well on various other bosses, not just the main weakness. These games are very well-designed so that you can never feel 'stuck' and rarely feel like you truly "picked completely wrong" to an insurmountable degree. Unless you suck ass, of course.

MM7 is the only game where stages get noticeable differences or effects when you use weapons in them, while MM8 treats couple of the first weapons as traversal tools.
Beyond that Mega Man weapons might sometimes destroy specific blocks or structures, so to let you reach a collectible. Other than that they're weapons, where usually one is effective against one (or more bosses).
