You can play slightly different roles depending on your build; the skills are basically setup so that you can pretty much get all of them and there are only a few viable builds depending on who is in your party.
DQ is more like an adventure game with mid-to-heavy grinding and low difficulty turn based combat that, outside of the bosses, can be cheesed or put on auto with no detriment.
All DQ stories are basically the typical, generic mute boy saves the world. Although, they do have some subtle and surprising depth for what it presents as. It's about as safe as it gets if you like the genre.
Idk what RPG even means because most games give you a role to play, it's not like a TTRPG at all, other than the fantasy story line and the various side characters all playing a role.
