5 is the easiest to get currently, 4 golden is also available anywhere so you don't need to wait for the remake
for 3 either go with FES or the remake depending on your preferences, if you want to play the originals then
3 fes -> 4g -> p5r
otherwise the order won't matter because they won't differ much and feel "modern" enough

The times really have nothing to do with it. Atlus simply went into a different (read: pussified) direction with Persona series starting with 4, and that was already 8 years before 5.

If you’re a complete newcomer to Persona or even SMT on the whole, start with Persona 3. Any version you have access to or do/dont feel like paying for, whether the original, FES, Portable, or Reload. Purse Owner 1 is still a very fun game, I actually enjoyed its grid based combat and off-kilter atmosphere quite a bit, but I think your appreciation for it will only grow as you dip your toes into more and more MegaTen games, you’ll really appreciate how this spinoff series really started then. Unless you really enjoy older JRPGs, I’m not sure what value you’d get from it by starting with it.
P3 is a much simpler game in terms of combat for newcomers, and tonally it’s the perfect game for them too. It has enough trappings of sci-fi and bleak paranormal elements that it still feels connected to SMT and the older Personas, but it also isnt too different that it doesn’t even feel like the same IP like P4 or 5. It’s not perfect, pacing can be rough, the one central dungeon isn’t for everyone, and one of the twist villains is ridiculously stupid. But it’s a fun journey and the pay off is still worth it.

3 FES or the Remake the PSP version is downgraded to fit on the console they ported it to, it has stuff added to make up for it but its probably not worth it.
