>>715816291 (OP)Big AAA games are about the same then as they are today, the only real difference is the hellscape that is lootboxes, microtransactions, and DLC. In the early 2000s, shit like that did NOT exist. Expansion packs did exist, and they were generally pretty good.
The biggest contrast between then and now is the general attitude of gamers and server administration. Back then, the server admin was a faggot, we all made fun of him, and laughs were had by all. Now? Immediate permanent ban with no chance of appeal. Worse than that, server admins hardly exist anymore because third party dedicated server hosting is drying up in favor of first party servers, so publishers have more control of people's accounts. Shit like that did NOT exist, depending on the game. You bought Quake 3 Arena, hopped on a server, talked shit for a few hours, and left satisfied.
Gamers nowadays are very different. Like I said before, we talked a lot of shit, it wasn't just uncommon for shit talk to happen, it was guaranteed. Now? Gamers are scared of their own shadow, and anybody that dare step out of line, is reported to hell and back, if not banned in less than 15 seconds. I can't take that shit at all and I haven't really played multiplayer games because of it. However, this isn't a problem with the game itself, this is a problem of gamer culture being uprooted by normie faggots that can't take a little banter, and the greedy publishers that encourage that behavior so the meanie poopoo heads don't scare away their normie money cows.
I will say that visually, games are very different, but that's to be expected. Was "woke" a thing back then? Not really, but even now most woke things can be eye rolled and ignored.
tl;dr - The games themselves are about the same, but gamers are different and gayer than ever.
