When did this sort of insanity on the internet start?
People get on one thing as "the bad thing" of the day, and then continuously one-up each other on how much they hate it.
It's the same with NFTs, AI, Crypto, and so many other things.
Once they get it in their heads that it's a bad thing for the world, all bets are off, and they feel justified saying the most vile shit imaginable.

Since it's inception, really. The difference is the scope of audience sizes. All of those moderators with the chips on their shoulder from old forums/BBS? That attitude has become the norm for shitlords on social media. The increase of audience and the frequency of response makes it terrible. People have naturally learned what the media did a long time ago-- outrage and hyperbole garner attention. People want attention.

That has been the case for a long time now. The prevalence of paid online working with Xbox was a larger red flag than horse armor was. Look at all the f2p and mobile gaming garbage.

except it's the complete oppositem Sony and Microsoft increased their console/accessory prices mid-generation and no one bat an eye, Bethesda released the new Doom for $80 but the only negative thing discussed about it were the performance issues and the shitty combat. Then Nintendo releases the Switch 2 for $450 and Mario Kart for $80 and suddenly they are the most greedy company in the world. Same thing with the US EULA, it's evil when Nintendo does it, not for anyone else.

Covid. It made normies lose their shit because they had to be inside 24/7 for two years and had nothing better to do other than lose their minds on the internet.
