The major problem going on with modern Nintendo games is that they keep coming up with all of these amazing ideas for gameplay mechanics and gimmicks, but they're failing to use those gimmicks to their full potential in truly dynamic or challenging ways. Eventually, said gimmick/mechanic becomes a repetitive chore and the games end up feeling like an over-glorified tech demo as a result.

It's a good game and has quite possibly the greatest moveset ever conceived in a 3D platformer. DK controls phenomenally. You can tell the moment you start playing that they were doing everything in their power to make DK feel good to move around with.They made the best decision to focus on elevation and verticality.

2D DK is what you play when you want more challenge than Mario, I was hoping that would translate to 3D but alas.

In a weird way it feels like this game could’ve been released back in 2017 (if the technology was up to the task anyway) and odyssey this week. I say that because it doesn’t really feel like they learned from Odyssey’s shortcomings. You still have filler layers used for just a boss and a few bananas, you still have some silly bananas where you just talk to cranky and get one. The design philosophy behind base movement vs. transformation movement is the same, you can do like 95% of areas without a transformation just like in odyssey. So far the bosses were a bit better in Odyssey, like Mecha-Wiggler was a cool fight and the only thing that comes close to it right now would be this overgrown thorny rose that looks goth and I’d fuck it because it’s the only one so far that’s had three actual phases.

It feels less like a Donkey Kong game and more like ...like Super Mario Odyssey. And I don't mean like a Mario game, it just feels like Odyssey 2.

A typical Donkey Kong game (specifically a Rare made one) would be heavily set in the jungle, and have as many Kongs as possible. Yet, the all of the monkey miners and the Void Co. Kongs don't feel like "Rareware Kongs", if that makes sense.

Bananza feels like it has so little of that Rareware or even Retro charm. Heck, Cranky, Diddy and Dixie feels out of place here; the setting is that unlike of typical DKC.
