The story also starts with her finding her past and freeing the espers but then they just go crazy and you hunt them down and genocide them as optional completionist objectives

it's because there's not really a main protag of ff6 and it's very much an ensemble cast game that Terra simply bookends, and not even for the ending as re-recruiting her in the 2nd half is completely optional. And even if you insist she's the MC, then Celes is the co-MC.

That being said, her design's sick, her abilities are cool and she's extremely strong and can simultaneously be one of the best fighters and mages on the crew AND learns tons of magic automatically, so there's no reason NOT to use her all the time that you can if you're not doing some kind of meme run

Terra hardly is a protagonist. You can complete the second half of the game without even seeing her again, and if you recruit her she's just sort of there. In the first half she's a mandatory party member and plot relevant, but doubles as damsel in distress and takes almost none of the executive decisions.

Firion was great in Dissdia, what are you talking about? Wild Roses was the password for the rebellion he became apart of in his world so the rose was literally a symbol for his desire for freedom and peace. As others has said, Terra is unfortunately a case of FFVI being an ensemble cast with a lot of characters, multiple of whom could lay claim to the 'main character' role (especially Locke/Celes) but there is not supposed to BE any one, central 'main' character. However because most other FF's don't follow this formula and crossover games like Dissidia want one specific rep per game, Terra is usually the default 'main' character of her game because she's the first playable party member and gets a decent amount of the focus but again there isn't meant to be one in FFVI.

That said Terra is great and even given her having to share the spotlight in her game I can think of less memorable main protagonists

Then FF7 came and took all the scene, considering that he was the first installment with 3D models, while FF6 had that kind of graphic that was not appealing like, for example, Tifa's boobs on 7. Then it must be said that FF6 start and end with the game. No one ever asked more of it after what happened on the game itself, while the non-ending of FF7 dragged the fans on continuing on theory-crafing, fueling their curiosity and thirstyness on having a proper ending, seeing what happened to the characters after the ending events.

VI's stands out because its cast is huge and every character has a nice story.
Every writer wrote two characters, max, so it really feels like a bunch of people coming from VERY different backgrounds without leaning too much into archetypes. That being said, Terra is the catalyst of the story.
Even then, that's a rich man's problem when you have an ensemble cast so good that you can argue for that many characters' importance as in FFVI

For the most simple face wreckage? Terra, Celes, Relm, Mog. Mog can be swapped with Locke or Edgar if you like. It depends on which you value most highly; Mog has snow muffler and moogle charm, Locke has steal and valiant knife shticks, plus can use the lightbringer and ultima weapon if you just want to smash physicals, and Edgar has lightbringer/ultima weapon plus the how autocrossbow/flash can easily clear out trash without spending any resources. (Plus inflicting status weaknesses and full party confusion on enemies for Edgar, but those don't come up too often in practice.)
Gau can be an easy bosskiller if you just want to go pure cheese (it's possible to pick up nightshade without too much hassle), but if you want versatility and/or you haven't learned the specifics of cheesing veldt mechanics he'll involve more effort than "simple facewrecking". Praise Xi.

Rydia was more of a surrogate little sister than daughter to Cecil.
She's also the most loyal person to him next to Rosa and debatably Cid despite him totally ruining her life in pretty much every conceivable way. To Cecil, she's more or less the result of him going against his orders and regret for his past sins coming back to forgive him for legit trying to do the right thing and wishing for repentance. Sephiroth never impressed me as a villain he's weak because rookie teenage Cloud managed to stab him in the back. Sephiroth is meant to be a successful super soldier with extreme senses. So him being crippled like that left me unimpressed. The remake is worse because we see the party repeatedly fight Sephiroth directly and kick his ass killing his image even a dead girl was humiliating him.
