In terms of gameplay yes

I played all of them except Other M and the remake of II, and beat them all except for Prime 3

Calling this the best one is a completely acceptable stance. While I consider Prime 2 the best, I respect the argument that this is better. It’s just so fun, replayable, challenging, great. It’s the only one where I actually wanted to 100% and do the speedrun challenges. Dread mode was absolutely fantastic. It’s at least the best 2D Metroid

Yeah which is why I said gameplay. Fusion has the best bosses.

Metroid are all good enough in their own ways or within specific contexts that I won't waste anger about anybody else having the "wrong" opinion.

For me Dread was slightly above middle of the pack, with the original NES/GB duo being the weakest and Prime 1 or 2 being my favorite.

I've played Super, Zero Mission and Fusion a ton of times with Fusion being my most played Metroid. I also have beaten the NES Metroid. I think Dread was by far the hardest of these games at least. Also seemed to be the biggest of the 2D worlds they have made so far. I cannot recall any single area in any of the other 2D Metroids being quite as large as the biggest areas/zones in Dread.

I wish Nintendo would do an All Stars kind of collection for all their 2D Metroids.

I don't think it's useful abstracting the "gameplay" from everything else. Games should be appraised holistically.
