Does anybody else think about how much different video gaming would be if a classic and very commonly played game, like Half Life 2 or Mario or something, would be if it had just one new or different enemy or power up or something? Like if the developers had changed one thing in development, would we still be nostalgic for the same game 20+ years in the future just with something totally new? Would it even have been that popular?

would only change anything if it was vastly different and pioneering something, barnacles are pretty unique

i'm actually not but I was thinking about it watching Gmod map explorations and stuff
because Half Life 2 was so iconic and had all these very memorable enemies and items but it's like what if they added just one or two more or had different ones; would we even have the same experiences? Would random zombies spawning on Gmod maps hit the same with the new enemies or would it be like not? I sometimes wonder if games would feel less limited and "better" if they had added just one or two new enemies in development or whatever and we were growing up with this instead, but I figure mentally it'd work out to be the exact same.

originally for Diablo 1 they wanted to sell items as floppy disc DLC, where you would buy gacha packs like MTG card packs.
