Kratos’ story ended with 3. He was always a man who spurned personal accountability, redemption and self-improvement. He had several chances and turned down each of them only delving deeper into his vices. Dad of War is an entirely different character and all of his supposed development happened off screen. But it doesn't hold up when scrutinized in such a way. here's a take both reddit and 4chan will dislike. GOW 2017 is the best GOW and Ragnarok is fucking terrible.

despite the cutscene walking the actual gameplay of 2017 is by leaps the best the franchise had ever had. the story is also very good. its basically a story about Kratos choosing to retire. accepts the horrible things hes done, DOESN'T try to claim that he's redeemed, just that he knows it was wrong and that he'll never act that way again. then he focuses his energy into letting Atreus live how he wants to live and supporting him. it all makes sense. also Baldur is an excellent rival, he chews scenery.

Ragnarok fucks the whole thing. now that subtle, well done choice on Kratos's part is just too fucking subtle. needs to be the leader of the viking avengers and they're gonna do a big team up and take down Odin forever. there's like 9 new characters and they're all fucking horrible marvel quip lords. Odin sucks. Atreus sucks now too. apparently it was written by different people and you can absolutely tell, they have no idea what made the first one work.

ragnarok is a trainwreck made by people who did not care about anything. tyr is a nothingburger, you save him and then he just stands around doing nothing. norse gods barely appear. thor dies like a bitch so suddenly i didn't even realize he died. none of the plot points set up are resolved, kratos does not die, jormungandr is a blink and you'll miss it event, athena does not reappear and then freya is treated as a poor didnu grieving mother despite cursing her son out of selfish desire to "protect" him. and then the fucking angroboda part. her being a nigger is just the cherry on top, her section literally never fucking ends and then she barely even appears after so what was the point

It's not the idea, it's the execution. It's done poorly both overall and with many smaller things like the kid being annoying, Kratos' interactions with other characters, characters being stupid with ZERO charm and retarded half-witted modern dialogue that makes the whole thing a pain to go through.
Simply just having a nice idea behind your story won't automatically make it good, your playthrough not a bore and your ears not bleed after hearing that kid and the annoying woman talk, it won't elevate everything else that's done bad or mediocre at best.

Agree on everything minus the gameplay. Ragnarok, for all its faults, it's a clear step up from 2018 in the gameplay aspect.
Aside from the obvious point that they added a new weapon, thus increasing depth, they also added some much needed verticality with the blades, plus the rpg elements actually matter and you can make builds. I cheesed the Muspelhein final challenges on Give Me God of War by going full regen/defense and becoming unkillable.
Shame the story sucked.
