It sold 2.5 million copies in 2003, almost double what Chronicles pulled. Sure Legend BTFO'd that number right after but still actually sold more than Anniversary which pushed 1.3 million copies.

People of /v/, if my studio approached id Software to make a Doom 3 sequel, what would you want in that sequel? It's always been a dream of mine to do so, but I haven't had a good pitch yet.

I know Doom 3 was divisive for some because of its slower, more atmospheric pace compared to the classic Doom style, but it still holds a special place in my heart. The horror elements, the atmosphere, and that heavy, chunky feel of combat still feels unique in the Doom franchise.

If you were in my shoes, what would you push for in a follow-up? More action? More horror? A deeper story? More technical advancements with the engine? Would you keep the darker tone or lean back into the fast-paced, arena-style gameplay?

Drop your ideas and wild pitches. I’ve been toying around with concepts, but I want to hear what /v/ thinks is necessary for a Doom 3 sequel to be worthy of the franchise. This could be our chance to make it happen!

Also, keep it real no “make it like Doom 2016” responses. I know the industry has moved on, but I want something that stays true to Doom 3’s vibe while moving forward.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

ZoomZooms won't know this but when Doom3 came out it was pushing the limits of grafics and you actually had to get an expensive monster PC to run it with all the settings maxxed out, that was a big selling point back then and basically it was the "Crysis" of it's time. They had tech demos showing off the badass looking monsters and creepy shadow effects that gamers had scarcely ever seen before in an FPS. It definitely suffered from the "Crysis effect" (people assuming that because it had outstanding graphics it had to be a very boring game in terms of other factors like story and gameplay) but no it was in fact really good. Also was something of a sp00ky game since it incorporated horror elements succesfully I still to this day remember the weapons locker with "666" on the code lock, fuck that shit

I got some horror vibes from Doom 3. The player character feels more human than in the previous games, you feel more fragile, I think especially it comes from the flashlight being it's own separate thing, unlike in say Half Life where the flashlight is integrated in your suit and can be used independantly of whatever is in your hands.

Very funny however that they keep porting Doom 1 and 2 which are even more known for not needing this treatment. Probably couldn't use existing source ports due to license restrictions though.
Imagine how many games would still be abandonware if the DOSBox license didn't allow commercial use.

I'm probably full of shit but I feel like the perception of classic Doom as more power fantasy than horror is largely due to people becoming too good at it, both because people never stopped playing it for 30 years and also because the gameplay is like a cut-down version of what is second-nature to modern gamers as soon as you bind movement to WASD.
It's scary if you're 7 and are so inexperienced with first-person shooters that you don't even think of using the keyboard and mouse simultaneously and you're playing a copy of a friend's shareware floppy while mom isn't looking because she said the game is evil.

That is a core reason. You see the same sort of thing with resident evil games, though 4 is perhaps the best example where "it was never scary" because said people don't remember their first time experience any more but the 27th playthrough where they are blitzing the game.

I don't mind Doom 3 but hopefully you should have enough IQ to understand a game's sale numbers and a game's impact on the brand are not the same thing. Doom 3 sold like crazy primarily because it was a sequel to Doom 1 and Doom 2, just like Dragon Age Inquisition sold like crazy because it was a sequel to the previous 2 Dragon Age games, just like Mass Effect 3 sold like crazy by being a sequel to two famous Mass Effect games.

Games like Doom are in the position to capitalize on the hype of previous games of a series which gives them a lot of attention, but what they do with that attention matters. Dragon Age Inquisition sold an incredible number of copies but it also completely killed the hype for the series and made everyone feel fatigued by it, like it's not going in a direction that'll produce fun. Doom 3, despite being a much better than game DA:I, did something similar to Doom.

I played Doom 3 on a gforce2 MX. Can you even comprehend the sheer magnitude of that experience? Being able to launch and play a game like that on a 32mb GPU? Of course not, you useless faggot. All you play is slop that would not even work on a computer that doesn't have the latest goyvidia windows 11 cocksucker certified cpu.

the best thing about Rage 2 is the combat. Only game to make me feel like some Judge Dredd character or similar action hero.
Very satisfying to raid one of the bandit hideouts and just go bananas.

It's really sad Rage 2 was made from the concept art of the original expanded universe but then literally Anita Sarkessian ruined it.

>Doom 3 killed the series
who ever said this?
the series went silent because they wanted to do an original IP, there were a few in development before they settled on RAGE
the series wasn't even dead for longer than 4 years, Doom 4 was announced in 2008

The real youtuber myth is that people hated Doom 3. That's a perspective from the brutal doom le rip and tear fans
Go check doomworld in 2004, people weren't particularly upset about it. Everyone knew it was going to be survival horror themed. The only thing I noticed was people hated the cliffhanger ending

honestly doom 3 was one of the LAST games i played that actually impressed me. It came out when i was pretty young and i got filtered just being scared playing it. but it was amazing seeing how good everything looked compared to the dooms and quakes which came before it. it really felt like the future. it also had basically the best ambience of any game i had ever played and felt like i was in THAT world when i played it. was really amazing. i think they could have given it a few more months of dev time to improve the pacing in certain areas but its a good game. I always enjoy it more when i pretend that you arent doom guy, but a normal marine. so of course its completely different. (apparently this is a different universe) but i just head canon it the way i feel like because its a spin off game and its more fun this way to LARP that you are a normal guy surviving the shit that normal doom guy can breeze through.

i think they overcorrected with nu doom because of people screaming about how doom 3 was too slow and methodical. i honestly never found nu doom fun. i played a few levels of the first one and shut it off. i really do not like the gameplay loop of having to execute enemies to regen health its just feels to arcadey doesnt feel like a mechanic which should be in DOOM. DOOM 1 would have been retarded if enemies started flashing and you had to punch them in order to get your health back.
