You might notice that Croc's "competition" doesn't include Sonic... what a strange time in gaming history.
Sonic isn't considered to be competition for a child-friendly platformer, but Lara Croft is and apparently Croc and Tomb Raider share the same audience.

Did you forget how badly Sega fucked up Sonic and their company?
Did you forget that Lara Croft was legitimately a gaming icon?

Is that "shake a stick at" comment supposed to imply masturbating to Lara?

No, I haven't, but it really does feel like an entirely different lifetime or timeline.

Sega itself was relevant for a very short time. The megadrive was their only successful console.

As a kid I didn't even know the Saturn existed. Almost every kid had a PS1, few had a N64, literally nobody had a Saturn. I didn't find out that Sega had another console between the Mega Drive and the Dreamcast until I read about it in some gaming magazines in the mid 00s. No shit Sonic was literally irrelevant at the time.

It's funny how little Sonic actually mattered in the long run and how much he still lived rent free in Nintendo's head
They REALLY did not like the idea of someone challenging them for their crown for even a single second

Was Lara as huge overseas as she was in the UK? I was a little too young (born 95) to experience the hype, but I remember seeing her in ads, the games always being on shelves and whenever the topic of the PS1 comes up Tomb Raider is always mentioned, especially by people who don't really play games.

Same, I got a Mega Drive from my mum's friend in the late 90s, I had a Playstation at the time and I literally just thought Sega stopped making games until I saw the Dreamcast a few years later. It was only when I started taking a genuine interest in how games were being made and I saw this magazine cover on the old Naughty Dog website I found out about the Saturn.

It's purely because there was no good 3D Sonic at that time. Adventure wasn't out yet and Sonic-hype was starting to dwindle.

Sonic was in a mini dark age between S&K and Adventure. He was basically irrelevant in the 5th gen because Sonic Team made Nights instead and handed the mainline sonic game responsibility to a different studio. Then that studio came up with Sonic Xtreme which was unsalvageable shit and rightfully was canceled.

Sonic X-treme would've had the same gameplay as Bug! which wasn't very fun or 3D to begin with.

It's hard to think of gaming characters other than Lara Croft who wielded guns while still being a distinct character. Other than some copout like Duke Nukem or Doomguy, she was probably the only gaming character who legitimately crossed over into "action movie hero" in the minds of normal people completely uninterested in gaming.

Not really. Early to mid 90's were all about mascot characters and gross out humor like Ren and Stimpy. EWJ was a perfectly marketable character back then: the games were good enough (at least the first one), Jim himself was likeable and the cartoon was actually kinda funny.

Jim was the anti-Bubsy.

I'll be honest, I remember liking the demo as a kid and then playing I think Croc 2 on PC at a cybercafe in the early 2000s. I tried Croc a few years ago and sure, I can get used to the tank controls in Tomb Raider, but fuck this one with a rake

Now there's an ancient concept to zoomers. I remember my friend's dad reserving the N64 setup at a local one for a birthday one year. Played Starfox and Mario Kart all afternoon.

Yeah, I had no internet back then (it was a bit of a new thing still) and that place is how I discovered many things (online multiplayer, emulators and roms, random R34 flash animations, modding games, etc). They had a few PC games you could play and Croc 2 was one of em.
A popular mod they had was DBZ Bid for Power. I remember the owner's little daughter loved to play it, but she never played it against the usual crowd. She played with me once, because I didn't know shit about how to play FPS games (and probably because I was closer to her age). Good times.
