Did you ever hate math in highschool?
It does not make sense.

I did. That was also before I realized I’m simply not smart just because I pretend I am. Not good at math = not intelligent.

i never made it past algebra 1. i failed every math class from 8th to 12th grade but no child left behind made it so that i still graduated high school. i have a professionally diagnosed iq of 74.

Math turned to shit once they introduced letters. Algebra is made up and fake. It doesn't exist in the real world.

No, but several courses in (the final nail in the coffin would have been calculus) my approach of not coming to classes (or sleeping during classes), never homework, and never studying to tests, or in other words doing literally nothing but irregularly showing up to classes and showing up to tests and often seeing the problems for the first time, no longer cut it and I quit high school. I did already have enough courses completed that I was eligible to do final exams in "adult highschool" with lower course requirements, however, which my mother forced me to do once I turned some years, and in university I started putting in the barest minimal effort and that was enough to ace bachelor's level math courses which I did for fun.

But what's going on in that dialogue? Certainly, there's "studying for the test" (rote memorization of facts known to come up in the test without genuine understanding), but how do you "study for the test" in math other than gaining the proficiency to do the problem sets?

No, because I'm not a mathlet. Everyone thought I was because I was slow with arithmetic and being unable to fully memorize times tables, but when we got past that part and got into more complex stuff like Pre-Cal and Calc 1, I understood it like getting new moves in a puzzle game and using those moves to move the other pieces around in order to get a desired result. Other kids who used to call me retarded slowly filtered out as I graduated uni with an industrial engineering degree and had to go back to school for a trade job as an aircraft mechanic because there were basically no offers for me after university. I now work with a bunch of retards who believe that wildfires are started by space lasers and I don't give a fuck because I make good money, love my job, and KNOW I'm better at math than 95% of the fucks there.

We had a girl in my class who was outright AGITATED when concept of negative numbers was introduced. She was positively fuming and argued with teacher because of that. So yeah, there are people who hate math, because abstractions are too much for them to handle.

i got good grades in everything, but english took a lot of effort to keep those grades. writing essays and trying to make bullshit reasons for what the author means in one hour along with quizzes on novels we had to read where the question may only pertain to 1-2 sentences out of the 50-80pages we had to read for the day was complete ass.
i guess the essay writing was good at teaching you how to bullshit effectively for your career/future schooling, but those quizzes were painful.

That's stupid.
The letters only represent unknown values.
If that's too abstract for you, just replace the letters with numbered question marks.

I'm one of the few math nerds who love arithmetic more than theory.
It's like a puzzle game with infinite depth, I loved math class and doing exercises as a kid, and that has stayed with me through Calculus, Linear Algebra and ODE's.

Same anon, teaching factorization in a bubble is so retarded, even for algebra it doesn't make any sense without an application.
If you get into physics and pre-calc stuff you'd see why it's so useful, turning sums into products is a broken tech.

I sucked at math from grades 7th to 9th, I actually got a 1/100 on a test because I couldn't solve anything and this was basic binomials and geometry. I was average in grades 10th to 12th, I just sucked at proof exercises and complicated exercises that want you to "bound" some bullshit integral with a bunch of functions inside it without calculating, just by analysis and by proving a = b so b = c kind of stuff. In university however I started understanding everything, analysis, linear algebra, statistics etc felt like they were more real in university than in school, in school it felt like you were practicing for a math olympiad with the bullshit questions they had however in university they were applied to reality and started making sense.

I can relate minus the having money part. One of my highschool achievements was turning rhe conversation of Celsius to Fahrenheit into a fraction because it made more sense to me. Like when a teacher explains the yards in a football field to the 90%, but I understood it.
