All the dragons were glorified tyrants and warlords. Something snapped in Parthaarnuax and he decided it was wrong to enslave others and taught Nords the Thuum. With the Thuum they were able to defeat the dragons and Alduin. Then he became the spiritual leader of the Greybeards.

In all honesty his crimes are far too old to account for if theyre even that bad and he helped mankind anyways.

you can just tell when you're talking to people who have had normal lives that it's like a lobotomy. they just don't get it. which is of course fine, i don't 'get' a lot of things too. but i just feel like they've only lived half a life, and their thoughts and feelings and reactions to things always seem to me to be shallow. it's not just a lack of ability to understand other people, but not even realising that there is something there to understand in the first place.

To be born good, obviously. To overcome one's evil nature, they must be surrounded by good natured people to take inspiration from. A society full of good people is high-trust and functional, a society full of bad people who may become good after killing 30 people and realizing "killing bad" is absolutely fucked.
