PS2 was one of the most disappointing consoles ever made but zoomers weren't alive to remember that. Dreamcast was kicking its ass from 2000-2001.
This is what everyone deeply invested in the hobby thought of the PS2 when it was released:

PS2 had the strongest year 1 line up.

The picture quality is so clean on dreamcast especially if you hook it up through a VGA cable. PS2's blurry jagged crap is a big letdown in comparison

PS2 was really disappointing. It had a good library but didn’t deserve it. People get all hung up on its sales figures too but it sold 50+ million units after the PS3 came out due to a budget launch in South America and because it was positioned as a casual device cheap $99 alternative to the sold out Wii with games like guitar hero and buzz and singstar.

The frame buffer was too small so most games are interlaced using frames rendered as fields with alternating odd and even shifted frames to match the interlaced fields. The aliasing plus the interlacing created awful jaggies Dreamcast didn’t have. The original units stopped reading dual layer DVDs and CDs. The hardware was too difficult to develop for and some early games didn’t bother with the vector units because of this so they wound up looking worse than the best on Dreamcast. Middleware and developer familiarity eventually improved and obviously it has a huge library but it did nothing to deserve this at all. And yes it was ugly. It is still ugly. It’s not as ugly as a PS5 but it’s not aesthetically nice to look at.

The lighting was better but the resolution was lower plus they used half resolution frames to match interlaced fields causing horrible pixelation. When Capcom ported Code Veronica they cautioned it was not up to the graphical standard set on the Dreamcast. I remember having an early progressive scan TV that was the first expensive thing I ever bought (and a waste of money) and Devil May Cry turned to 240i/p in motion and 480i/p standing still. It was awful to look at but you can probably duplicate the same thing on a modern TV to see how bad it looked

Anon, I had 4x PS2s (but only one at a time) and a whole library of games that are still in the basement somewhere. But it was a very disappointing console. A disappointing console that had some great games but disappointing nonetheless. I wish all of the exclusive games had appeared on the GameCube or Xbox instead. Some wouldn’t have fit on GameCube discs though. Also the controller sucks, as somebody who owned a PSX with a digital pad and then got the analog afterthought I am amazed they have kept this tacked-on as an afterthought stick placement all these years and that gamers are okay with it

Nah, GameCube is one of the most popularly emulated consoles and that’s an objective (not subjective) fact. Emulation itself is a small amount of people anyways. PS2 emulation hasn’t even really progressed in well over a decade and is far from perfect but not enough people even care about it (plus it’s fine for most things)

Console lifespan you say? The GameCube dropped to $99 in 2003 and completely sold out during the holidays despite demand which was a bigger issue in Japan. It was restocked after the holidays when nobody cared. This contributed to the console dying and having a short lifespan. Nintendo killed it off in 2007 after the Wii released. Microsoft killed off the Xbox in 2005 when the 360 was introduced. Sony sold 50-60 million more PS2s after the PS3 released and mostly on South America to a bunch of swarthoids who love GTA because of their generic sociopathy and low IQ. It was introduced at a budget price. They didn’t release anything new except Buzz and Singstar. This is why PS2 is “the king” because they sold 50-60 million of them to a bunch of brown savages in third world shitholes after the PS3 came out
