On occasion, there is some difficulty knowing precisely where you need to go, but it's very good in over 90% of situations. At most, you need the compass.

One of my favorite situations was Klaus or whatever the moneylender's name is was telling me about how I needed to get money from an undertaker somewhere in Rhodes, and I was thinking about how you could even get to him but as it turns out there is very clearly a shop you pass through walking in town that have coffins. Another time was tracking with Charles and being able to follow the horse path in first person on horseback if you pay enough attention to the ground. In truth, I don't like the game a whole lot and think the free roam is kind of lame, but I love how you can rely on your basic sensibilities to find things instead of stupid shit like eagle vision.

I'm currently replaying RDR1 and I've got to say that while the missions themselves aren't bad, they lack variety worse than I remembered particularly if you're just doing the main story missions.
>Seth mission, clear Tumbleweed.
>Mission to rescue Bonnie immediately after, clear Tumbleweed again, same direction.
>Mexican Army mission, defend a train from Rebels while on horseback, leave from Chuparosa, ends by that blown up bridge on the east side of the map.
>Army mission, defend the train from Rebels, this time with a gatling gun, departs from Chuparosa, ends at the army camp by the east bridge again.
>Army backstab mission, ends with a shootout in Chuparosa
>Rebel mission, go to Chuparosa, shootout with the army, steal the train and take it east to meet the Rebels.
>Mission where you see Dutch in the bank, chase him to Bear Claw Camp for a shootout where he gets away.
>Mission with the professor and the Indian informant, ride to Bear Claw Camp for negotiations that end in a shootout.
RDR2 has some real slogs of drawn out walking sim missions on repeat playthroughs, but the first game contriving ways to put you in the same arena multiple times isn't good either.

It's not just significantly better written, but it understands it's a third person cover shooter and has a lot of fun with it. The shooting actually feels fun and dynamic.
2 went to hard on muh realism and as a result it often feels sluggish and awkward, and the cover system kinda retarded.
2 does do a lot of things better though, like the environments, hunting, horse riding and some other stuff, but 1 is truly the superior game even if 2 is a good as well.

Rockstar games have had this mold since 2001, more or less. There's awkwardness in the way their standard games play, but after a rougher start you'll get the hang of it and actually start to enjoy it, Bc you learn to navigate the controls and how to properly respond, this never really happened in 2, it always seemed like Arthur was shuffling around mid water, that he shoots way to slow, and I'm pretty sure is the forced realism that causes it.
1 was a lot quicker and more dynamic, and felt a lot more fun. Shootouts could be it's won reward in 1, in 2 it's always a punishment.
The realism does work wonders for the horse rearing and hunting though.

Story of 1. Gameplay of 2.

RDR2's story has a huge issue in that there's no real development of its characters, even when the story wants to pretend it does.
Arthur already starts the story as regretful outlaw, sure if you play with the morality system you can actually have a better (if boilerplate) redemption tale, but it's just not that strong. Same thing goes with the other characters. Dutch already starts as hypocritical, theatrical, egocentric and short sighted, his "fall" is more like a guy perpetually tripping stairs.
When you compare it to 1, which 2 is supposed to be a prequel to (but going into how it bungles that would take even more words than it's already taking) you notice it a lot more because 2 is supposed to be character driven. 1 has John as a static character getting stumbling across other peoples stories, while the narrative drives home the themes about the death of the Old West, security vs freedom, the slow encroachment of central powers and technology, etc.
2 has those exact themes, but it doesn't execute them nearly well enough, one of the reasons being that it choose to be so character focused, but at the same time it didn't write these characters well.

It wasn't an issue when you mowed down hordes of bandits in 1 because that part of the western genre and the game had a tone to match.
It's nonsensical how the gang can just slaughter a whole town and no level of government cares. Or how you can literally break into a federal prison with zero consequences.
When the story constantly insists that the gang attracting attention from the law bad, but literally all you do is attract attention and mow down law agents, you kinda have to wonder what schizo wrote this script.

RDR2 feels like two games hastily taped together.

In the one hand you have a detailed cowboy sandbox with a lot of interesting activities and cool emergent mechanics. Then in the other hand you have a dogshit railroaded campaign with zero of the freedom the game is known for. Basically a cowboy Uncharted with less interesting setpieces and slow af movement.

Those two parts are completely disconnected, and barely ever interfere with each other. Not even your equipment and stats matter, because the game is piss easy. If both halves were separated into individual games, neither of them would be particularly worse off.

Compare this with GTA San Andreas, where you weren't given equipment on mission start and lost them all on death. Then money actually mattered, and with it your open world activities. You also needed to buy houses to save. You had freedom in how to complete missions too, sometimes which car you were using at the start of a mission would be paramount to its success.

Not to mention shit like completing the fireman missions to become immune to fire, or getting ripped at the gym to do more melee damage. Or the mission you had to level lung capacity to even start. The campaign existed to propel you into engaging with the open world, and it was awesome.

Rockstar had the formula to success and threw it away for bigger maps.

RDR1 plot aside from finaly which is pretty kino is literally trash without knowing all the backstory and characters RDR2 created, entire game plot is basically this:
>go there and kill guy X you supposedly know and used to be friends with (who cares)
>go there and kill guy Y you supposedly know and used to be friends with (who cares)
>go there and kill guy XY you supposedly know and used to be friends with (who cares)
>go back to your beloved family (who cares, you see them only in last few missions)

It’s been years since I played 1 but I remember enjoying it more. Especially the multiplayer. I don’t like rockstar’s modern take on multiplayer. Outside multiplayer 2 would’ve been the better game if it didn’t take so god damn long to get anything done.

The last time I played RDR2 online, I spawned in New Austin and accidentally got too close to another player trying to rob a stage coach. Instantly I was dragged into the activity, he locked onto my horse, blew its brains out and shot me to death before I had a chance to leave. When I tried calling my horse back it said I needed to pay horse insurance. I turned it off and never touched it again.

2 was unnecessary, and anyone preferring it over the first are faggots, who are easily swayed by shiny graphics and shit writing. I only played 1, and I'm keeping to that.

2 is only salvageable if you finish the idiotic garbage story as fast as you can, skip all the cutscenes, do 0 optional missions and then mod the shit out of it to do fun wild west outlaw activities in the alleged outlaw wild west sandbox that are limited, moralizing and overall unsatisfactory in the vanilla version.
