I stopped watching Death Note after the very first episode after L dies. I have never seen in my entire life a more obvious forced continuation of a finished story due to its success in my life. Unfortunately it seems to have fooled most people since everyone treats it as the original intended vision.

Light was originally going to die after L's death according to Tsugumi Ohba (the creator of the manga). He was going to be killed by Ryuk after laughing at L's grave. This original version of the ending was even adapted in the anime and put on the special DVD bonus disc

Tsugumi also said that he always planned for Light to lose. He wrote him as a villain protagonist for a reason. He was disappointed after seeing how many of Japan's youth started doing terrorist attacks throughout the country to rebel against the system that "let them down". He decided to write a subversive Shounen MC that serves as a lesson to teens on how NOT to act. Tsugumi gave Light character traits that he personally dislikes, like narcissism, egocentrism, arrogance, and closed-mindedness, and made his story end in the most pathetic and humiliating way possible on purpose

Let's take Casca from Berserk for example. Casca is generally accepted to be the fantasy equivalent an Arab or Indian. But if you simply recolored her skin in Photoshop to make her a little lighter, she could pass for white. She doesn't have "white facial features" or "Indian facial features". In anime, race is almost entirely boiled down to skin tone. Of course, there are some characters who are specifically drawn to look distinctly like a race, like Aiber having a chad Scandinavian jaw, or, infamously, black characters having big lips. But 99% of the time, Japanese artists aren't thinking of race, and the 1% of the time they are, race is represented purely by skin tone. "Muh facial features" is schizo bullshit you're making up

The manga handles part 2 significantly better, but it's still a downgrade from part 1 and I understand why people dislike it.

Honestly, The Last Name has the best ending in Death Note and I reccomend watching it or at least the end where Light and L confront each other.
