I think this casting shows that Miyamoto has a much bigger influence over this movie than we think. Miyamoto wants actors who align with the vision he originally had in his mind all the way back in 1986.

I'll have to wait and see how the movie turns out, but I'm 99% certain it would've been better animated than live action. But if any Nintendo property had to be live action, only Zelda and Metroid would fit the bill.
