A while after I read Helter Skelter, I picked up another book called The Onion Field. It's about two cops who got murdered in LA around that time. They didn't even give the name of the defence attorney defending the bad guys in that one but I recognized him instantly by his antics and that really blew my mind. Irving fucking Kanarek, back again to defend the scummiest people with the scummiest tactics, who makes prosecutors fucking seeth. It was amazing. That will never happen again.

Closest thing I can imagine to today is Darrell Brooks. That one was nuts. Generally self-represented defendants get assigned a lawyer to babysit them so they don't act completely retarded all over the courtroom, but it didn't happen for Mr. Brooks.
