Were arcades that made you insert a quarter or two per continue better or worse than paying $60+ dollars for a video game? I'm a zoomer and never really went to arcades.

>paying $60+ dollars for a video game?
you're paying for a license and do not own the game so they can take it away at any time. Games as a service is in fact them trying to make video games like arcades again. But arcade games were 5 min larks, not involved 10+ hour novels, so they and their anti-consumer faggot supporters can eat all the shit.

Hours of enjoyment for the cost is very lopsided in the consumers favor since 2010 but the 60$ games were like 4h long in the arcade days, also the arcades were much more powerful than home stuff and could give you unique experiences. Kinda like going to the movie theater to see a new movie.

If you were good a single coin could last you for a while.

games back then where designed to make you lose super quickly and arcades would choose games based off of this, prioritizing coin gobblers
it was bad, there is a good reason they died, it wasn't just because of the home console market being more convenient

I'm a zoomer and have been to a few arcades, and uh... it's entirely dependent on two things
1. the cabinets the arcade has are good
2. your skill level
if you're good at an arcade game you can get hours of enjoyment on just a few quarters, whereas with buying a physical game you're spending 60$+ upfront, so your skill level really isn't in the equation. the problem is that most every fucking game now is not worth 60$ let alone 70-80$

>prioritizing coin gobblers
and they started doing this a lot more frequently in the middle of the decade too, with games like dragon's lair, gauntlet, and ghosts 'n' goblins. games that are brutally hard and are purposefully designed to suck your wallet dry. y'know with a game like dig dug or donkey kong you could at least get reasonably far before the game gets too munchy, but with titles like gng you either got good and mastered it or you fed quarter after quarter into it trying to get past the first goddamn level

There's also the social aspect of arcade games. It's more like a social outing with your friends, like watching a movie in theater vs watching it home on your phone.
