I've always wondered this about TASes in general. I think there is some bruteforcing done, but my understanding is that for the most part its still basically people inputting stuff. I wonder how they can be so confidant that a series of inputs is actually completely optimal. It seems like new TASes are only created when new tech / strategies are discovered too.

Is it just the amount of time that goes into a TAS, so there just aren't that many? If more people did it, could you have a TAS which just had more optimal movement in a few places?

Nintendo's products are intended for children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Their games are not even particularly well designed, especially these days. And mostly rely on the cuteness of the characters, and nostalgia. Japanese love worshiping corporatins, but it's strange to see a western person doing the same.
The hype around Nintendo is just pure brand worship. You want your cute smiting nonverbal characters who make their "bing bing wahoo" noises with intentionally janky game mechanics.

You know that Mario 64 is filled with puzzles, and you can just longjump right over 60% of them? That's poor game design. That's because the game is a busted, janky, shitty pile of nuts and bolts which you're treating as the Torah itself.

If you look at tasvideos.org, there are plenty of TASes which are more or less the same as a previous TAS but with slight optimizations. TASes like this don't flood the website though since most people don't bother making a new submission until there's been a substantial amount of improvement. For example, the SM64 120 star TAS on tasvideos is from 2012. The community has been actively working on the game the entire time, they just don't bother to assemble every star into a single project file and make a new submission. The most optimal star times are logged in a spreadsheet, and in total there's been almost 5 minutes saved over the 2012 TAS.

TASes that are verifiably 100% impossible to optimize are extremely rare due to the inherit complexity of most video games. They are exclusive to simple games that can be programmatically brute forced. The TAS for Arkanoid on the NES is a good example of this. The game was reimplemented in C++ and a brute force program tried every possible way of hitting the ball in each level until the most optimal solutions were found.

Huh, so they have to find a suitable position in the long RNG sequence, keep track of it and then time dust spawns correctly to setup the coin variables, all weaved into the other movement. Doing TAS seems like a open ended puzzle game in itself.

To reach skill you need understanding. You need to understand when you're making brush strokes based on muscle memory rather than how you want an artpiece to turn out. You need understanding to know how your favorite car turns differently on asphalt, dirt, mud, and in the rain. You need to actually be able to picture something in your head before you're just able to *do* it. There's a difference between simply doing something and actually improving. Making improvement. Trying to be better. There's tons of theory behind just about anything and you need to find the right balance of both to improve.

There is literally no advice for dedication besides just doing it so if you fail at that point then lol. If anything, make an actual study plan and schedule. Set up alarms or some shit. Slap yourself in the balls 10 times if you don't do it. Whatever it takes.

I don't know how true this is, but I recall reading that he was a teacher with a formal education in computer science. That about tracks with what he's doing now considering that beneath the veneer of Mario 64 his videos teach introductory computer science concepts.

some TASes are made by bots now. Usually for simple games where you're doing something like checking the angle/power of every shot you can take and seeing what gives the best results. I think some ultra specific set ups like bit clips in banjo kazooie are found by bots too.

you need to have autism to dedicate yourself to something
the problem is your autistic interest is completely unproductive 99% of the time and it's impossible to make yourself care and put the same kind of effort into anything else

for me it's certain multiplayer video games

you never made that connection because its obviously fucking retarded. this is like calling a jump shot "RNG". 99% of it is skill which is why top players aren't random and there are commonly players that can come a long and dominate, like greensuigi for SM64 who took all 5 categories and made them all his bitch, long after everyone thought the game was too optimized to go much further
