I think the reason this felt so forced and out of place is that they're inserting modern LGBT lingo that was only really widely used in the last 5-10 years into a medieval fantasy environment.

It would have gone down smoother if it was like "I'm some [made up fantasy term], I neither feel like a man or a woman", so that it still fits within a fantasy medieval universe, and doesn't feel like hamfisted modern day politics/social issues.

It's a very "have your cake and it eat too" situation. This and the "pulling a Barv" scene are comically ridiculous and clearly written to be awkward and uncomfortable. But the protagonist and other party characters are all written to play along and there is no "straight man" (pun intended) in the scenes. Reminder the last person in your party who was the same race as Taash wanted to kill himself for the mere suggestion of disrespecting his ancestor, Qunari are extremely honor bound to family and tradition and it wouldn't have been out of character for his mother to put a knife straight through his neck right there as they were talking and then continue on like nothing had happened or as if she never had a son named Taash.

I think a better way to do this scene would have been to IMMEDIATELY have his mother attack him, you the protagonists stops her, and then after a series of emotional quests of her being exactly the Qunari she is, she eventually begrudgingly accepts him the son but retains a hatred for him the person. That's the funny part: If you watch that cutscene, her mom is actually very understanding and says something akin to "We have something in our language describing this, its Tal'naqraath, it means someone whose soul is neither male nor female" (can't remember the term and I just made something up) and the non-binary character just yells over her and accuses her of being close-minded.
There was a comment on the YouTube video for it that I found really accurate: It seems like the mom is desperately trying to save the roleplay and bring it back to the fantasy setting, but the non-binary character keeps breaking character.
