I was going to reply with a very condescending and rude comment because i genuinely cannot for the life of me understand how people not only enjoy fate so much, but would consider it in such high regard. Especially when you have muv-luv alternative so low. So lets be real here, please explain your taste. I genuinely and I do mean genuinely want to understand why you like the things you do and dont like the things you dont. I am struggling to understand, but I want to. I want to fight the urge to just tell you that your taste is awful and to kys because that would be the easy thing to do.

I think it's possible for a VN to tell a quality story, but the issue is that VNs do a decent job of masking dogshit writing and allow mediocre authors to get away with all kinds of shit that would get you laughed out of any publishing house by even low-tier editors.
You can easily verify this by reading any of that hackjob 竜騎士07's purely written works (LNs), going in with the understanding that there is almost no bar for quality when it comes to light novel publishing; anyone with even a dogshit idea gets their slop picked up off narou and put on bookstore shelves wholesale nowadays.
It would take actual, established, pedigreed western authors taking a crack at VNs in order to see the medium advance to anything resembling a mature state, but those writers don't need to waste their time on VNs to begin with since they can just print money writing traditional novels.

I’m reading Majikoi at the minute, just finished Mayuchi’s route. It was satisfyingly stupid, doing the battle royale in the president and her arc being growing out of her imaginary friend as she grew up was oddly touching when you consider how ridiculous it is

One counterpoint I will make to my post is that certain styles of games which actually take full advantage of the fact that they are interactive games are the exception to this rule. Take something like the 風雨来記 series or 北へ, both of which are, at their core, tourism slop where you jump from landmark to landmark because Japan wants to fool otakus into traveling to 北海道 and 沖縄 so those shitholes stay relevant. These work exceptionally well as VNs (I guess more accurately ADV but let's not get too detailed) because rather than simply being told "I traveled to x location and did y thing", you are making the choices to go to x location and see y thing, seeking out the content as it pleases you rather than being dragged along for the ride.

While that anon's list has some very, VERY questionable choices muv luv alternative is grossly overrated. F/SN at the very least has some nice endings in all three routes. I genuinely don't understand the chokehold the epitome of "it gets good at 50 hours (it doesn't) bro" that is mla has on the VN community, although thankfully people are starting to come to their senses and realize how bloated and repetitive it actually is underneath the admittedly novel concept and high production values.
