That said, joining the alliance would have been equally stupid. I think its been so long since the warcraft games people think the High Elves are like Tolkien elves, they weren't, they were like 40k CWE eldar arrogance with burger behaviour.

They literally only joined the alliance because the old horde was a world-ending threat and peaced out the second the the dark portal went down. The High levers were assholes who hated the alliance.

I think the best approach would have been to make a third Illidari faction, but I suspect that technical constraints would have been a problem. Apparently, even two factions was tough for their development, and I can't imagine fitting in a third one.

I love Blood Elves, first character I ever made and Eversong Woods is that place for me where I get nostalgic as hell. I also think them being in the Horde is awesome precisely because their appearance contrasts with the rest so much. You can cope however much you like how blood elves "achksually" fit the horde because they're vengeful, cruel, sylvanas is an elf, etc. but none of that matters in the end since they run against the aesthetic. Warcraft is one of those series that runs on aesthetics. Elves coming from an ancient high magical culture and undead humans squatting in the ruins of their once glorious kingdom will always be a poor fit for the horde because aesthetically the horde are hunter-gatherer barbarians beginning to settle into a sedentary civilization. Alliance history is corporeal and continuous, buildings and books, while the horde's history is oral and tradition.

If you back and look at old interviews thats the exact reason they did it. The idea was to put an evil ugly race with the alliance (which is why male draenei look like archimonde) and a pretty race with the horde. They were also concerned that way more people were playing alliance at the time than horde and thought this would even it out.

That's just a product of having 2 factions. The trolls, tauren, and orcs are all part of the orc faction in WC3, just as the humans, elves, and dwarves are the human faction. Night elves are just as incongruous with the alliance, but night elves and the Forsaken both make their respective factions a bit more interesting and less one-dimensional.
