They were never going to last in america. People put up with it back bc you had to go to play the best versions of games when consoles hadnt caught up, to play fighting games with strangers, when sitdown drivers and rhythm games were still a novelty.

But also the commercial viability of arcades is limited to dense population centers therefor cities therefore its high crime and nasty, parents want to tale kids to arcades.

But... if you wanted to try to bring em back, put the machines in retro game stores. People like buying retro games rn and those sorts of people will play games. Dont put them in bars, where theyll just get neglected and rot, normie bar fags dont actually play they just like the vibe and the memories.

Yeah arcades are like movie theaters. Something that has been technologically obsolete for years now but is still around because of cultural relevance.

The tactic right now is to leverage pinball in order to support actual cabinets. I've seen a lot of arcades and barcades alike that have been able to work this way, and it's allowed them to survive in all kinds of locations

>is limited to dense population centers therefor cities therefore its high crime and nasty
Not necessarily. Cities with populations around 30-40k are large enough to support such things without being crime-ridden

Arcades still make sense, fg locals on console are pathetic in comparison. Sit down driver cabs are way cooler than just holding a dualshock or a little wheel peripheral, and linked set ups let you race strangers irl. Rhythm cabinets can get really wacky and do all sorts of shit thatd be impractical for consoles. You can confine the game design to the limitations of a dualshock, but even then its just not the same.

Theres still a lot of reasons to play in arcade aside from "the tech used to be better but consoles caught up"

I actually wonder if arcades couldve survived in america if theyd put cabs in gamestops and shit like that.

You ever notice how these big modern FECs have like a 1, 2 punch thing going on?

Like one local operation or chain buys it, too many niggers break everything, they go put of business. Then like 6 months later some other chain or owner is in there like "hey I know how to handle this" and then after the niggers break the urinals off the wall a couple times they close too.

Gameworks, to Tilt, to dead.

Round 1, to Dave and Busters, to dead, etc.

I don't think we necessarily need to be looking to the past all the time. It seems every discussion about arcades is relegated to jerking off that one time at Chuck E Cheese when you were 10 and quarter fed through some shitty Konami beat em up.

Arcade games are still being made. Namco just shipped Goldstorm Pirates and Resident Evil Dead Shot is on location test for example.

There seems to be more arcades now than I can ever remember even in the 80s, however, they are all filled with redemption games. They may or may not have cabinets and pinball machines. Retro arcades with and without alcohol donโ€™t seem to last very long but Iโ€™ve still got some around me.

the downtown arcade near me is constantly packed to the brim every friday night. it is technically a barcade so it has to have the normalfag magnets like raw thrills to play with their hinge date, but it's still far superior to the shitty chaincades like dnb and round 1. i stick to the fighting games and brush up on my cvs2 team.

i went to my first "nerd bar" or whatever yesterday in my city

place had like 5 tables with people playing tcg's or some tabeltop shit, the "bar" was more like a snack bar no alcohol which is wierd cuz i thought d+d and booze is like the ultimate combination but whatever, they sold yugioh and one peice cards and other little games to take home and the corner of the place had some arcade machines

yeah those sucked ass the controls were wierd, the cabinets were obvious set dressing with just a rasp-pi running it on the inside and they had like 5 total games or something.

the only thing worth playing was like Mrs Pac man (why not normal pac man idek)

so yeah arcades are kinda dead cuz nerds do not know how to run them. They wont comeback unless someone has a genuinely good idea for one but the demand doesnt seem to be there in my city.

shame cuz as a gamer / nerd id love to meet likeminded people but a few landwhales sitting in what looks like a cafeteria with some pathfinder maps isnt my idea of bringing back arcades / nerd spaces.

someone should just invent a gamer themed nightclub so that the women drive the footfall needed to bring in people

Move to Japan. It's still as big as they were.
>in america
I'm not sure it's even possible to do that. You'd need to bring back the mall mentality in the US for that and I'm unsure it's doable at all now with the interconnected nature of the world via the internet and social media.
Arcades were (and in JP still are to a degree) the gathering places. Leaderboards were social media. Now with actual social media, I don't think people want to go out and experience it in person.
It's not impossible, malls became a reality so maybe if a new AI tech makes the internet an uninhabitable place people will go out again as much as they did before.
Also Pokemon Go moved people to such a RIDICULOUS degree that I can't even describe with words how physically motion-full the summer of 2016 was again. So it's definitely possible but extremely unlikely.

There's no value in arcades when you can play multiplayer games either for free or own them for $60. Unless the arcade model goes back to 25 cents a game instead of the Jewish MULTIPLE DOLLARS for a try they do nowadays

Arcades have atmosphere, man. Thatโ€™s what it is. That and being able to feel absorbed in a cabinet with the TV set deep into it, the tactile sensation of the buttons and joystick feeling different than a controller. Iโ€™m 33 so I caught like the very tail end of the second arcade revival in the US, places like Pizza Hut and the mall. It bums me out cause there isnโ€™t anything that really feels like a good scene near where Iโ€™m at. Gotta keep looking.

Arcades are popular in the US, theyโ€™re just full of redemption games. Every hotel or resort has an arcade, sometimes a giant one. Bowling alleys have them. Round 1 is popular, Chuck e Cheese is still around and is making stand alone arcades. There are retro and barcades that never used to be a thing. Bars have arcade games. Amusement parks have arcades. Etc. Theyโ€™re just mostly redemption games and claw machines. Traditional arcade games are scarce. The racing games are popular because you can race each other but the stand alone cabinets donโ€™t make any money. When you see a retro cabinet changes see itโ€™s been modified with a 50-in-1

mmhm

I go to these locations often, and no matter WHAT, there's always a ton of people playing pinball. It really strikes a chord with the 40-50+ crowd, and it's bolstered quite a bit by weekly and monthly play nights. Most of the time, if they have ANY form of event schedule, it is almost always focused entirely on pinball. Hell, even beyond arcades: I go to the local bowling alley each week, and while Gen Z is actually hitting the lanes, you get all the 50 year old Gen Xers being loud and drunk in the back obsessing over the few pinball machines they've got.

I dunno what it is, but Pinball has really been making a comeback these past couple years, and it makes a lot of money.

>free short video app on your phone
>free Youtube on your phone
>free Fortnite that plays on literally anything
>constant deluge of easily accessible free entertainment
>physical space you have to go somewhere and spend money per play

Kids don't have their own social spaces so they went online.
Arcades' sole advantage in the 80s and 90s was being better than consoles, and that technological advantage rapidly evaporated by 5th gen.
