DS2 has the soul and production values but it's not a game people want to play.
Nothing else on that list is even relevant. MarioKong and Assetflipring are both especially egregious to have up there. I say this as someone who is enjoying assetflipring quite a lot.

MGSV and Death Stranding faced stiff competition, so heavy Geoff couldn't give the games the award without blatantly showing his bias towards Kojima and therefore damaging the awards' reputation in front of audiences and sponsors
2025 is different because Death Stranding 2 is the only genuinely good game released this year; a very similar situation to when It Takes Two won its year's award.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is winning goty

E33 was has been my favorite game of 2025 so far; didn't pick up Nightreign because I don't like multiplayer-only multiplayer-focused games very much but it probably was pretty good if /v/ loathes it so much.
Also Death Stranding 2 must be horrible given how much /v/ dickrides it.

I disagree. I like the return to small passion driven teams only AI can allow. I think the industries biggest issue is the corporate diverse 500 person projects, and the fact they need to caste a wide net to recover costs.

If DS2 wins, it will be undeserved. I found it a thoroughly unenjoyable game compared to the first one. Yes, there are system improvements, yes the game looks stunning. No, the gameplay hasn't improved much, and yes the terrain is much more of a bitch to traverse without resorting to crutches.
The storytelling took a hard nose dive, where the game keeps you in the dark until, like, the very last two-three hours. Untill then I was playing the game thinking ''why am I doing this shit again??'' and it kept me in a bad mood, consciously and later unconsciously.
Furthermore it's a bit too cocksure of itself which annoyed as well, where the characters and actors pretend like they have made this wonderful product (yes, this sense of smugness oozes in the actual game) and they are patting themselves on the back for it while sucking kojimer's dick.
And I didn't appreciate that he was redoing MGS4's finale but with more Friendship Is Magic-elements involved. I genuinely did not like the game when I finished it.

I wouldn't say it was that high. Word of mouth (from journos that played it e.g.) was a little off from the start. But overal I liked the first game while thinking that it was similar to Asscreed 1; as in a decent first attempt, but not quite there yet.

My personal but conflicted choice for GOTY would have to be The Alters______, I say conflicted because the whole AI thing has soured my views on the devs a bit, and I wouldn't be surprised if they add a MTF Jan in next year's DLC

Still working my way through Donkey Kong, fun game but I wouldn't call it GOTY. Expedition 33 would be my choice, and it would cause the most seethe. DS2 is very good but the story is not great.

I would say E33 is a guarantee so its not worth discussing, but then again GoW did beat the actual game of the year, RDR2
