He's just like me...

What makes Mario iconic is that he's not a character. We know next to nothing about him, he's a blank slate that can be warped into whatever any given project needs him to be. This is by design so that he can be used in a wide variety of games and media.

It's not a race thing, it's a loser thing. Parents don't want their failure to launches mooching off them forever. It is a constant reminder that you failed as a parent to prepare your child to be an adult.
On the opposite end, a child that gets married and has kids obviously is a reflection of their parents success in creating an adult. You also said "her mom" which implies either her dad did not agree with that or dad is out of the picture/dead. It makes sense that a single mother with an empty nest would want to relive their motherhood days.

By 25 the vast majority have moved out. 60% of 20 year olds live with parents but only 15% of 25 year olds. I know two people 25 or older living with their parents - a friend from high school who plays 80 hours of FF14 a week and my coworkers son who similarly does nothing but play video games. Both of them have brothers who are moved out, have jobs, and are married.

That's what happened to me. I was getting bullied at school and the few friends I did have didn't live nearby. So I was forced to pass the time playing video games, I had zero options for entertainment
