Is this worth it or is it literally just a graphical overhaul and I can just upgrade the graphics of regular Oblivion with a mod?

It's mostly a graphical overhaul with some gameplay system updates.
You won't be able to mod the original Oblivion as extensively as the remaster because they grafted an entirely separate engine onto it.
There are pros and cons because of that, if you like modding the game it's probably better to play the original with mods because the dual engine makes the new game a pain in the ass to modify.

I enjoyed it and don't regret buying it but as a real bethesda game with modding potential it's DOA because of the Unreal shit, they'll inevitably release some creation club plug-in bullshit but that's going to be it. I bought it because I really wanted to see Oblivion with modern graphics, if you don't give a shit about that then it's not necessary.

the original engine is there for game logic, but it's been modded to load the visual assets through Unreal Engine 5, so if your mod adds any new assets, it won't be compatible.

Bethesda open world slop like fallout and elder scrolls use Gamebryo/Creation engine that's uniquely suited for packing russian-made porn mods onto it. Unreal is not that way and is not modding friendly, it doesn't accept random scripts being shoved into it like Gamebryo/creation. In order to make the remaster as pretty as it is, they used Unreal and transplanted Oblivion into it with some real frankenstein magic. But as a result, none of the thousands of Oblivion mods can be used for it, and making new mods or converting mods is also a huge pain if not impossible.

Whole point of Oblivion (in 2025) is to be able to mod it. You cannot do that, therefore there is no reason at all to play this over the original.

Not worth it imo.
You absolutely need modding just to make it playable which is not acceptable to be fair.
I had to install 100+ mods for this. I didn't even do that for Skyrim back in the day.
For Skyrim I remember having like 20 mods tops. And that was after I already had finished it at least once and had several hundreds of hours in it. This time I began modding it after 2 hours.
If you install 100+ mods for Skyrim you get a totally different game. With Reblivion you get a barely playable one. It's ridiculous.

It's as good as it was in 2006, maybe even a little better. But unless you're just really into spell crafting and playing a magic caster in general, it doesn't do anything that Skyrim doesn't do way better. Maybe when REBlivion modding is in full swing and we get something like Deadly Reflex or in general a good stealth/melee combat overhaul it might look different but Vanilla vs. Vanilla, Skyrim is just better.

Original with mods is the only way to play, other than vanilla. The remaster is pretty well done, honestly, but that is actually kind of the nail in the coffin for UE5 remakes. If the best one isn't worth playing, then it's kind of over for them.

Nah, he's 100% correct. Skyrim is an objectively better designed game overall with more memorable characters. Every time I play the Remastered, despite it looking way better than Skyrim, I have to keep reminding myself that it's an older game, meaning that the interiors are tiny and constantly cut into chunks, and there aren't any takedown animations, which is disappointing. The only thing Oblivion actually has over Skyrim are some of the core gameplay features, like acrobatics, persuasion, spellcrafting, and some of the general RPG mechanics and systems. Most NPCs have nothing interesting at all to say, and the conversations between them and other characters are incredibly shallow, especially when the vast majority of them involves the exact same voice actor talking to himself.

Compared to that Oblivion offers no real progression for melee/archer players at all. You pick up a piece of gear, "repair" it to 125% and that's it. Besides that, combat in Skyrim is also just straight up better. Sure, it's still dogshit but it's better than Oblivion. At least you get shield bash from the start, you have stealth kill animations, melee finishers and kill cams for ranged attacks. I'm not a magic caster player, i don't care about magic - ever. I play either assassins, archers, light armor barbarians or heavy armor knights. In any game. So the magic systems in Skyrim taking a hit is irrelevant to me and Bethesda focusing way more on physical classes was a welcome change. As i said, maybe in the future, when REBlivion gets modded to hell and back it might be good for me.

In Skyrim, Smithing and Alchemy progression requires repetitive, meaningless grinding. You must craft hundreds of iron daggers or health potions just to level up the skills, regardless of utility or variety.
In Oblivion, Alchemy skill increased through actual use, with better rewards for experimenting with different ingredients and effects. You are rewarded for playing the game.

Skinner box progression systems are in games because they work. Number goes up is fun. You can acknowledge it and enjoy it at the same time. Especially when your power progression is out pacing the enemies toughness. Putting on your archery gear, sneaking up on a dragon at a shrine and hitting him with an arrow that wipes out 80% of its health is fun. Suck my dick.

>Repetitive and meaningless grind
Yes, because leveling Light/Heavy Armor in Oblivion by letting some rats attack you for 5 hours is totally not a meaningless grind. In Oblivion, I've quite literally been encountering enemies in full Glass/Daedric armor very early in the game, which means I already have my endgame armor set, thus there's no point in searching for shit outside of enchanted gear past that point. Smithing a thousand Iron Daggers and getting Smithing to 100 right as you enter Riverwood gives you a ton of free levels to work with right at the start of the game. It's so fucking easy any retard (except you I guess because you're just that fucking stupid) can do it. And just so you know, Alchemy is the exact same type of grind, and the vast majority of the time everything is so fucking worthless that it's just shop fodder.

Sure, you can let rats smack you in a basement for 5 hours to level Heavy Armor. But DAGA SHIKASHI thatโ€™s not required to progress or be effective.
Oblivionโ€™s systems let you level through actual gameplay NIGGER GAME PLAY taking damage in fights, casting spells, or exploring as the game rewards variety, especially in Alchemy using new ingredients reveals effects and teaches you about the world. Itโ€™s exploration driven, not menu driven. In Skyrim smithing is detached from gameplay. You canโ€™t level it by using weapons or wearing gear only by sitting at a forge spamming daggers.
It becomes a meta chore, disconnected from moment to moment GAMEPLAY.
What a dumb little damage controller you are.

This game runs like complete shit on my PC. It almost got me to upgrade, but then I remembered that UE5 is just like that and I'll never buy a UE5 game again

Itโ€™s oblivion with Skyrim gameplay. It would be worth it if you could actually buy the shit on a disc but Iโ€™m skipping this dogshit until then

As it stands, it's worth it if you pirate it. The graphics are better, but the colors when transitioning in the day-night cycle is not as good, and they censored all the women but only lightly censored the men. The elder scrolls has never had any filter on sexuality until now. With the context of the original, you'll at least giggle when you see the Dark Brotherhood has enough respect to give Lucien's corpse fresh underwear. The general logic is copied almost exactly, but pick-pocketing inventories makes those PERMANENT outside of respawning inventories, breaking those quests if those NPCs were supposed to get a quest-specific item later. Hand-to-hand and two-handed has been further nerfed. The performance is inexcusable. The game spikes my GPU to use 310w from 78w out of the blue in innocuous spots, and my PSU can't handle that. I still want to beat it. but that really makes it a chore. I think the GPU is starting to artifact.
