assuming you need to appeal to the lowest common denominator when selling a product has always been a lie.
Plenty of luxury brands do just fine appealing to exclusive niche markets, oftentimes they outlive mass production slop brands.

The best period of gaming + the internet was when it was still gatekept. Yet, it still made money and still had games.
I don't need or want VR to be the next iphone. It just needs to support a small ecosystem of indie and AA devs.

>>715983675
it made money because back then games didn't take as much time and resources to develop (im assuming you mean the 1980-2009 period). if you can't release the game into a big enough market, it won't be very profitable with the years of development costs.

If it's any decent sure, in the future I will maybe grab something like this. Maybe. Affordability is a big thing. To save VR, you need to either convince people to spend an absurd amount on it, which is more difficult now than ever, or lower prices so that more people can actually try the goddamn thing and it becomes less of a niche.
Also some people don't like anything that may cause eyestrain. Remember the 3DS? I remember a lot of people never using the feature not because of the lower battery life, but because after 15-30 minutes it would start to cause some eye strain.

>but the VR userbase is stagnating. without the potential to attract new users and grow, why would the market appeal to game devs, outside of passion projects?
The flat videogame userbase started stagnating in the early-mid 2000s, so that clearly does not matter if you are satisfied with game release schedules after 2009-2011. Passion projects are practically all that matters now.
>it made money because back then games didn't take as much time and resources to develop (im assuming you mean the 1980-2009 period). if you can't release the game into a big enough market, it won't be very profitable with the years of development costs.
Resources and knowledge back then were super scarce. Now you have free engines, free modelling software, best practices, tutorials, etc.. The only reason games take so long to make now is due to shit management and scams.

I only agree in cases of hybrid. The competition is to high for "made for vr" on pc at least during this ongoing competency crisis. Its why most vr influencers (and paid posters here) like to try and pretend vr mods don't exist or don't work well or "require" 5090s which are all outright lies. The industry needs to keep consumers from making the "switch" to pc. In the standalone market it's only trash pickup simulators competing with other trash pickup simulators

A fragmented userbase is a massive problem.
VR is only going to get anywhere if it can build on a large library of games, hardware and enthusiast modding over time, same as the flat market did. Not even flat consoles can sustain completely memoryholing all games on the prior platform every 6-8 years, since for the most part they are surviving on ports to bridge the gaps left by their complete lack of games.

The people building specifically for the meta platform are aiming at the literal bottom of the barrel of minimum viable product. So much so they're only surviving on the good will built up from the previous gen when they actually would add huge free updates instead of just abandoning it. Those days seem gone already and once the market realizes the money spigot will stop even for the "mvp" crowd. That's why there's such a hard push for AR. It resets the clock, but only for AR. Its also why AR will be DOA because they didn't filter out the bad actors

Also AR has the same problem as VR when it comes to resources and why they need to promote PCMR connectivity more. AR could be sweet if they can offload the bulk of it to the PC. I'm honestly surprised UEVR didn't get more involved in AR because it seemed the simpilist way to make full games AR overnight.

Just noticing. Even tho the clock resets for AR, the told that bring real competition to the tech demo producers is already here. The reset will last much less as long.

The answer is and always has been hybrid. In fact i think a streaming (watching others playing while inside of their game surrounding themselves) is probably the real answer. Since people, for whatever reason, are just doing less. Most would rather watch.

>Games were much better back then
Back when? If you're trying to make out that early vr was any significant amount of time ago then you're the one making yourself sound young.

They don't need to, they just need to release unreal engine games. All unreal engine games (without anticheat) are automatically pcvr games and they blow made for vr games out of the water

Halo style strap. You can remove the face cushion because the goggles are suspended in front of your face.

All they need is some extra ui stuff and of possible melee interactions. That's why devs should unofficially support the mods through plug ins like bloober team did with the silent hill remake. Its "official" so it avoids scrutiny but fixes the gaps so it can be enjoyed and touted as a full vr gane

same price as a headset released 6 years ago before covid inflation, but with double the resolution and a quarter the size and weight? sounds like a good deal to me

I swear Iโ€™m not a shill, but itโ€™s honestly not as bad as it seems. Itโ€™s weird because I am very sensitive to refresh rate in monitors but it barely bothers me in VR.
