You are not wrong OP. The farther you get into the game, the worse it gets. Both story and gameplay. Act 3 is pathetic. Still a decent game if you ignore it.

This. It was obvious the paintress wouldn't be played straight, but the reveals and the family drama really were less interesting than the expedition. The fact that the painted characters took such a backseat and didn't once question the nature of their existence really made them all feel pointless.

Don't let the detractors get to you. Although I did enjoy the family stuff, it's not a crazy 10/10 game like people hyped it up to be. Good game, but not amazing. A bit unrefined and shallow in some ways, but it's understandable for a studio's first game. The further you get through it, the more you realize this. The overhype is just the reaction of people finally getting an interesting turn-based RPG to show Japan to "do better."

You won't see Gustave's arm for too long because it's Unreal Engine. Everything is way too dark. However Maelle's eye is pretty disgusting to look at.
