This. It was obvious the paintress wouldn't be played straight, but the reveals and the family drama really were less interesting than the expedition. The fact that the painted characters took such a backseat and didn't once question the nature of their existence really made them all feel pointless.

Don't let the detractors get to you. Although I did enjoy the family stuff, it's not a crazy 10/10 game like people hyped it up to be. Good game, but not amazing. A bit unrefined and shallow in some ways, but it's understandable for a studio's first game. The further you get through it, the more you realize this. The overhype is just the reaction of people finally getting an interesting turn-based RPG to show Japan to "do better."
